5.0 out of 5 stars B00005K31E, November 21, 2004
This review is from: Remember Who I Am (Audio CD)
I've seen this band live a few times, and that's the only way to see the band at its best. While most new bands are better after much overproduction, a live audience brings out an extra zing from this powerhouse of a group.

I've seen over 200 concerts in my life, and I have NEVER seen an audience fall in love with an opening band as quickly or as passionately as the Indigo Girls' audience fell for Girlyman. After the first song, the audience exploded into wild clapping and whistling. It was unreal. So there's my plug for seeing them live if you're ever so fortunate.

But for those who don't live close enough to see them live, don't pass up the next best thing. If you love music--real music played by real, talented musicians with a love for making music--you won't go wrong with buying this CD. I guarantee that if you appreciate lush harmonies, well crafted lyrics, and songs with both emotional depth and humor, you will love this CD.

If you do run across a song that's not quite your thing, you can't deny that it's well executed. And you should just stick around for the next song, which is likely to draw from a very different musical genre. These three musicians are so strong that they can make amazing songs in any style. Some songs are definitely folk, some a little twangy, and some have more of a pop feel (the type of pop we can only wish were on the radio). But all of them are amazing.

The first two songs are a powerhouse opening, much better than the beginning tracks on the CDs of most well established stars. "Viola" is just gorgeous, and "Hey Rose" is addictive. You could easily listen to just those two tracks and get your money's worth.

"Fall Stories" is whimsical. "Say Goodbye," which can be confused as a slightly cheesy breakup song, is actually a lovely tribute to a deceased mentor, and the song has some great lines. "The Shape I Found You In" is a simple, sparse song and one of the strongest. Other bands would tack on another verse for a happily-ever-after, while Girlyman keeps it honest and ambiguous.

And this band will only get better and better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Harmony, October 13, 2004

I heard Girlyman for the first time yesterday opening for the Indigo Girls. I was in awe ... one of their songs nearly brought me to tears, another had me laughing ... their harmony is nothing less than natural and their lyrics display raw and tangible emotion. On top of all of this, their stage presence seemed professional. They joked with us, joked with each other, and told us stories as if the stage were their home. They definately held their own and I am looking forward to watching them evolve. I consider it a gift that the Indigo Girls unveiled for us last night. It isn't every day that I fall in love with a new band.

It's always a thrill to be pleasantly surprised by an opening act you've never heard of. I first heard Girlyman when they opened for the Indigo Girls last fall, and was absolutely floored. "Say Goodbye," "Viola" and "The Shape I Found You In" are favorites, and their cover of "My Sweet Lord" is fun, although a little safe.

They were a fun band to see live. Girlyman possesses excellent stage presence and good-natured wit. I look forward to more great things from them.
