Northern California's Pomo Indians are numbered among the world's best skilled weavers, and no finer collection of their basket weaving exists than that created by Elsie Allen and her mother, Annie Burke. Basketweavers themselves, these two women broke with the Pomo tradition that buried or destroyed baskets after their owners died, in order to preserve a precious legacy and educate others about Pomo culture. It is the only Pomo basket collection known to have been formed by a weaver, especially for educational purposes. Remember Your Relations: The Elsie Allen Baskets, Family & Friends is a beautifully printed, full-color book featuring more than a hundred baskets from their collection. Represented are twenty-six master weavers, all Pomo, who lived from the turn of the century to the present. The baskets include those used as cooking and eating utensils, winnowing baskets, fish traps, and cradles. The text of Remember Your Relations describes the lives of the various basketweavers, explaining their relationship to one another and the community which nurtured them. A Must Have of California Native History,

This book should be on every Native American history devotee and basket lover's shelves. As a former Mendocino County and Bay Area resident, I applaud the beautiful photographs and easy reading style in Remember Your Relations. To better understand the legacy of Pomo basketmakers, take a trip to Mendocino, Sonoma, and Lake Counties. Stroll down back country lanes. Gaze at the scenery and landscapes. If you don't fall in love with this area, something's wrong. Thanks Dot, Suzanne, and Susan Billy for making this incredible history available to those of us who adore the basketmakers. Long live their stories! We do not forget.
