1.0 out of 5 stars Exploitation
Don't buy this one! Although the voice is eternal, this CD was produced by greedy people who decided to try make a quick buck and who picked up discarded takes and left-overs and put them together with a lot of talk and little music. Phyllis would certainly have disapproved - may her soul rest in peace!

2.0 out of 5 stars Making a quick buck......, December 1, 2003

This Cd is only for the hardcore Hyman fan, who have to own every note she ever recorded(like me). The producers quickly put out this CD after her death to obviously capitalize on her passing. Hyman reportedly loved to sit in on sessions and that is what this is, but the quality, despite her voice, is just not there. If you are a newcomer to Phyllis, check out the many other fine examples of her immense talent. When you become an addict to her voice(and you will), then there may be room in your collection for this CD. Be forewarned, though.

Sure, her picture is on the cover..BUT this is NOT a Phyllis Hyman Cd. Sure....she sat in on a jam session...and for those that think she would sound good if she sang the phone book....this is about as close to that wish as you can get.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Few Hidden Gems, August 8, 2000

Although not sanctioned by the Phyllis Hyman Estate, there are distinctions to this effort worth noting. For the passionate aficionado, included are six previously unavailable or unreleased tracks: "Hold Me," "And That Would Be," "Deep Inside Of You," "Groove With You," "It's Time To Go" and "I Can't Live Without You." "Hold Me" is a tender duet with Rod Wilson and comes across as such. From the audio perspective, "And That Would Be" seems unrefined from the mastering process; unbecoming of the Sophisticated Lady's natural talents. "Deep Inside Of You" showcases Phyllis' mastering of the quiet storm format while "Groove With You" is a remake of the Isley Brothers classic R&B cut. "It's Time To Go" was rescued from oblivion from deep in the vaults. It is the very upbeat "I Can't Live Without You" that further reminds one of Phyllis' diverse repertroire--a disco-flavored track not to be missed. The remaining tracks are currently available elsewhere.

The most prolific criticism would be the narrative segments, which would have been better served to omit, as the segments do not provide any substantial information. Also worth noting is that this release features an extended version of "Do Me" and a slightly longer version of "Baby, I'm Gonna Love You," both previously only available on "One On One."

For starters this CD was poorly mastered- an indication of its being rushed into production. Secondly, the spoken and other non-music segments are the worst kind of filler. I can't blame the estate of Phyllis Hyman for refusing to sanction this. Avoid it!
