4.0 out of 5 stars Make-believers, October 22, 2003
This review is from: Rememberese (Audio CD)
"Rememberese," the first EP by the Stills, does exactly what it's supposed to do: interests listeners in the band's music and style, usually with their best stuff, while leaving them hungry for the debut album, "Logic Will Break Your Heart."

The Stills resurrect the better aspects of 80s-style pop-rock. It's swirling and dreamy pop-rock like the plaintive "Still in Love Song," wailing "Killer Bees," the rather unexceptional, guitar-led "Talk To Me," and the whirling, dark-pop dance remix, "Still In Love Song [12" Extended Remix]."

It's a little too early to tell what sort of impact the Stills will have, musically. But "Rememberese" has some good stuff packed into those four songs. The vocals are plaintive and sad but somehow avoid being whiny. The haunting, whirling melodies are grounded into more ordinary ground with the guitar work, but not in a very normal way. (Some of the licks in the "Still in Love" remix sound exactly like heartbeats)

"Rememberese" is a good introduction to the Stills, but will leave music-goers desperate for the full-length album. A nice listen, that hints at good stuff to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Surprise, June 24, 2003

Sonically these guys are straight from the 80's pop that can really rock school. Hooks but nothing soft about them. They balanced the old sound without seeming nostalgic about it.

Memory is like emotions once had, and now looked at in retrospect, like a Xerox copy. Those memories fade over time. The Stills are a Montreal band that lives in New York City. Like the Streets, they are on Vice Records, which means instant street cred for all those people who like to read the Do's and Don'ts section in Vice Magazine. This is a short EP that has new wave influences and mines some of the same fields as Interpol and Elefant. The "Still In Love Song" sounds like an instant classic and I can imagine kids hitting the dancefloor every time they heard that song. "Killer Bees" is more Echo and The Bunnymen than U2. But there is that same yearning that inspired those bands: whether God enters the picture it's unknown. This is just a sample of hopefully good things to come, and hopefully we will not have to wait.
