Editorial Reviews

Review

This is a very interesting book, not only full of beautiful quilts, but quilts with a story. These quilts are inspired by the diary of Adelia, a young woman who lived in lllinois at the time of the American Civil War. The book includes excerpts from the diary and period photos. The fourteen projects include full instructions. This 80 page book is something to treasure. --Karen Platt's Book Reviews

I love this book. One half Adelia Thomas's diary; the other half reproduction projects. Adelia was 19 in 1861, living in northern Illinois on the cusp of the Civil War. Her diary reflects her everyday life, family, and sewing, set against the backdrop of advancing war. Includes historical photographs and 14 lovely projects inspired by her diary. --Stick Your Nose in a Book: Quilting Book Reviews by Jennifer Zoeterman

More About the Author

Kathleen Tracy made her first small quilt from a Martingale pattern book she picked up in 2000. Making quilts for her daughter's American Girl dolls sparked an interest in history and led to the publication of American Doll Quilts in 2004. Kathleen looks to antique quilts for inspiration in making her scrappy quilts from simple blocks and hopes that her books make the past come alive and give quilters a connection with quilters from long ago. She is also the author of Prairie Children & Their Quilts, Remembering Adelia and The Civil War Sewing Circle.

Kathleen is a frequent lecturer to quilt guilds across the country and conducts workshops on making small quilts with an antique look. In addition to quilting, Kathleen is an avid reader and loves gardening, cooking and making simple beaded jewelry for family and friends. She lives in Illinois, with her husband, college-aged son, teenage daughter and their 2 dogs. Kathleen loves to hear from other quilters and welcomes comments. 5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring quilts, March 26, 2009
This review is from: Remembering Adelia: Quilts Inspired by Her Diary (That Patchwork Place) (Paperback)
Remembering Adelia is a wonderful book, sharing what life was like through entries from Adelia's diary. The quilt patterns are beautiful and instructions are suitable for both a beginner and the experienced quilt maker. I can't wait to start cutting out the cover quilt and I am positive that I will make all the projects in the book.

Truly a wonderful read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, April 3, 2009
This review is from: Remembering Adelia: Quilts Inspired by Her Diary (That Patchwork Place) (Paperback)
Unlike a lot of quilt books that I buy and find 1 maybe 2 patterns I would do, this book is chock full of patterns I'm itching to get started on. I'm moving one to the top of my to do list to begin this weekend in fact. You'll find everything in here from a housewife (huswife) to wallhangings to larger quilts. And the pictures and diary excerpts just add to what is already a great pattern book. If you like history and quilts then buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Diary and quilt patterns, December 11, 2009
This review is from: Remembering Adelia: Quilts Inspired by Her Diary (That Patchwork Place) (Paperback)
Ms. Tracy couldn't make up her mind on whether to write a novel about the Civil War or write a book about quilting. While both are favorite subjects of mind, I was looking for a book about quilting.

18 of the 80 pages are devoted to the diary of Adelia Bennett. I love old diaries and reading about how life was during a certain time period but I would rather have had those 18 pages with quilt patterns.

The patterns are made of period fabric so they have an antique look. Of course, you could use any fabric and it would give it an updated look. The patterns are clearly written with graphics for those of us that like to have a visual help. The materials and cutting lists provide yardage and cut sizes needed.

Instructions on creating the blocks and assembling the top are provided. Some of the finishing is left up to you and some tell you how to quilt it.

There is a six page basic quilting section and a bio paragraph about the author at the back of the book.
