I bought this book several months ago and have used it off and on ever since. Junior's makes those common, simple recipes taste so much better than one might be used to. 3.0 out of 5 stars nothing spectacular
I bought this book hoping to be able to make a great cheesecake. I made the marble cheesecake and quite honestly I thought that it [was awful]! I would have expected better from juniors, which is know for it's cheesecakes. I will give it one compliment, the corn muffin recipe is great and it is the only reason that I gave it 3 stars because I was not happy with any other...

This review is from: Welcome to Junior's! Remembering Brooklyn With Recipes and Memories from Its Favorite Restaurant (Hardcover)
I bought this book several months ago and have used it off and on ever since. Junior's makes those common, simple recipes taste so much better than one might be used to. Standouts for me so far include chocolate chip cookies, brownies, Buffalo wings, and, oddly, the fried chicken! The dipping batter recipe is simply outstanding for frying. It beats the pants off of the traditional flour->buttermilk or egg->cornflakes routine.

I'm finally just getting around to making the cheescake (tonight) and am sure that I will not be disappointed.

Get this book for a slice of fine Americana...

5.0 out of 5 stars recipes that really deliver!, June 25, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Welcome to Junior's! Remembering Brooklyn With Recipes and Memories from Its Favorite Restaurant (Hardcover)
I recently made the Strawberry Cheesecake, and it was out of this world--best I've ever had. I find the directions to almost all the recipes very clear and easy to follow. The extra-big Tea Biscuits are fabulous, and the recipe for the Vienna Rolls alone is worth the cost of the book. (By the way, the rolls call for malted milk powder, which can be purchased from the King Arthur Catalogue. If you're not familiar with this catalogue, go to their web site; you'll love it.) Our family also enjoyed the Spaghetti with Big Meatballs and Mac and Cheese Pie. If you're looking for big flavor with an emphasis on comfort foods, this book delivers. I'm looking forward to making the Chocolate Fudge Layer Cake for my next birthday. This is one of my favorite cookbooks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it for Fun, Read it for Recipes, October 16, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Welcome to Junior's! Remembering Brooklyn With Recipes and Memories from Its Favorite Restaurant (Hardcover)
I've never been to Brooklyn and was unfamiliar with Junior's until I bought this book through Amazon.

First, I'd like to complement the designer of the book. It's colorful, well organized and fun to read! Too often, cookbooks designed with 'style' become either hard to read or hard to find recipes within. This book has balance.

I didn't buy this book to cook from, I was more interested in the history of the restaurant. The story, beginning with Enduro in the pre-war years, is beautifully written and a joy to read. I've passed it around to several friends who enjoyed it as much as I have.

I've tried a number of the recipes and they are good, though not truly exceptional. I didn't find this surprising, as often restaurant recipes don't translate well to home cooking. Also, we can't discount the value of restaurant atmosphere. I'm certain an institution like Junior's can enhance a simple glass of milk with atmosphere!

And, no, the cheesecake recipe given in the book didn't impress me. I read in another review that this isn't the same as the one at the restaurant and I can believe that. It simply isn't anything special.

Regardless, this is a fun book, full of nostalgic good feelings, and I'm glad I bought it. Certainly, should I get up to Brooklyn, this restaurant will be one of my first stops!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantasic history, but recipes are not precise, June 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Welcome to Junior's! Remembering Brooklyn With Recipes and Memories from Its Favorite Restaurant (Hardcover)
I enjoyed reading about the evolution of Junior's and Brooklyn, but thought the recipes lacked clarity. For example: the Coconut Macaroon recipe never told you when or how to add the coconut! Nevertheless, I would have bought the book with just the cheesecake recipe and the history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not One Bad Recipe, May 26, 2009

This review is from: Welcome to Junior's! Remembering Brooklyn With Recipes and Memories from Its Favorite Restaurant (Hardcover)
I've had this cookbook for two years now and its very, very good. The recipes work and they taste just like the products you get from Junior's. All my NY friends and family say the cheesecake recipe tastes just like the one from the store. The chicken broth recipe is the best I've ever used at home. I've been a serious cook for thirty years and I know my way around a kitchen. When I purchase a cookbook, I feel fortunate if I use and like one recipe. Most books wind up in the garage. But not this one. Even the bread recipes are good and work well. You want real Jewish NY deli food, this is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like Restaurant Recipes?, March 30, 2001
This review is from: Welcome to Junior's! Remembering Brooklyn With Recipes and Memories from Its Favorite Restaurant (Hardcover)
Perhaps you are like me. I love restaurant recipes. This book more than delivers. This book does a historical breakdown on Junior's as it gives recipes for the most popular dishes of the restaurants 60 plus year tenure. This book contains recipes like Ice Cream Sodas, all sorts of soups, home cooking items like mashed potatoes, meat loaf, potato pancakes. This book has an extensive section on baked goods like their famous cheesecake, brownies, butter cookies, and many more.

The book is well designed and pleasing to look at. The recipes are simple to read, and they taste great. The book also offers a good deal of history and pictures of Brooklyn through out the ages. You don't need to be from this area to enjoy this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice look back at the history of a neighborhood & good food., January 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Welcome to Junior's! Remembering Brooklyn With Recipes and Memories from Its Favorite Restaurant (Hardcover)
WELCOME TO JUNIOR'S is as much of a nostalgic look back at one of this country's most famous urban communities as it is a cookbook. The authors trace the background of Brooklyn and its many different immigrant groups from the 1800s through the present day. In addition, there is a pleasant narrative of the restaurant's history from its beginnings in a different format in the 1920s through its present-day incarnation. While the authors interweave some US history through it all, their attention to detail is somewhat off--they have FDR dying in the wrong month of 1945, for example, and Martin Luther King, Jr. assassinated in the wrong city.

The recipes, however, are quite good. Not everything will appeal to everyone, but there is enough variety for all of us. Even simple items such as the blueberry muffins have just the right details that make them so much better than what you are probably eating on weekend mornings now! While there is a strong emphasis on baked goods, the entrees such as meat loaf and macaroni & cheese are not to be overlooked. They involve a step or two more than some of us are used to, but they evoke nostalgia & good eating no matter where you call home.

It's good food & good reading, all in one book!

If you can't eat at Junior's this is the next best thing. The combination of recipes and history make an interesting read. The chestnut stuffing is the best I have ever had and the cheesecake is absolutely the best in the world, bar none.

I just loved reading this "cookbook". The recipes all look so good. I already made the Deepdish Blueberry Pie and their pastry recipe, it was WONDERFUL.I even told some co-workers about these recipes. Now, I just wish I could go to Brooklyn and eat at Juniors. Maybe someday.
