No two people experience grief in precisely the same way, and no one can tell you how to grieve. It is a process that can't be rushed or avoided. There are no simple shortcuts-it must be lived. Our intention is not to provide a formula or roadmap to grieving. Instead, we have chosen to include a wide range of feelings, options, issues, and experiences that, hopefully, you will relate to as your grief ebbs and flows over time. There are nearly three hundred entries within Remembering With Love. You may want to start at the beginning and follow along, or use the Reader's Guide to locate the specific topics that coincide with your own needs. Some pages may feel appropriate for a particular day, while others may not. We invite you to draw the messages you find most meaningful into your heart and leave the others for another time. you may also wish to revisit pages that are especially meaningful to you. This book begins with a section titled The Early Days. These pages offer immediate words of encouragement which can be read daily during this trying time. As the weeks and months progress, new challenges and concerns will confront you. The sections titled The Early Weeks and The Uneven Path address issues that may surface at this time, allowing you to find the messages that speak to your own concerns. As you continue your struggle to heal, you may notice that at times your feelings may become less intense. At some point you may discover that you are having more good days than bad, when the pain of grief will not always seem quite so overwhelming. The section titled The Continuing Journey Towards Healing helps you recognize your progress toward renewal while continuing to offer validation of your woundedness. As important as it is to recognize that you have survived the first year, we are aware that grieving does not abruptly end after the first anniversary. The section titled Beyond The First Year takes you past this point, offering ongoing emotional support. Special Days, Moments, and Concerns is a collection of poetry and prose for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and considerations of particular significance. You may find a need for additional encouragement at these critical times. Finally, a resource list of support organizations is included at the end of this book for your use. We hope it will help you find additional sources of strength during this most difficult and trying journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remembering with Love, January 15, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Remembering with Love: Messages of Hope for the First Year of Grieving and Beyond (Paperback)
After the sudden death of my mother and oldest son in an automobile accident, I could not concentrate enough to even read. As time went by, I was eventually able to read short things that did not require deep concentration. This book was wonderful for me because I could handle reading the short messages of hope. It helped me so much. This book is unique in that it reaches out to losses of all types in a very effective way. At the beginning of each message, the author begins by quoting someone who has lost a loved one. She then uses that thought to give hope to those who are grieving. I plan to purchase additional copies of this book to give to others who lose loved ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly liberating book/ an excellent source of support, June 18, 1998
This review is from: Remembering with Love: Messages of Hope for the First Year of Grieving and Beyond (Paperback)
Having struggled with many confusing feelings for a year and a half after the sudden death of my beloved 19 year old son, I found this book by accident while browsing through a bookstore in San Francisco in 1993. From the moment I picked it off the shelf I drew comfort from the many short stories of people like myself who are experiencing feelings of total devastation, anger (particularly at God), loneliness, numbness and guilt for not being able to get control of my feelings. To see these feelings verbalized by others, made me realize that not only is it okay to have these feelings, but it is also normal. To be told that I have a RIGHT to be angry, lonely, numb and anything else I may be feeling, freed me from my guilt. I lost my son. I have every right to grieve. And to grieve, any way, and for as long as I need to. A truly liberating book. It still sits out on my table for me to use when I am down on myself. I have recommended it to many people.

This book helped me with my own grieving, and I have also given it to several friends who recently lost loved ones. The short 1-2 page essays and thoughts, intended to be a "thought for today" format, are especially helpful for people who, because they are grieving, may not be able to focus on longer books, for longer periods of time. It's a real gem!
