Having collected albums & videos of Doc Watson & friends for some years, I found "Remembering Merle" by falling over it in a sale bin in a local shop. It has been collated clearly with some fondness by Michael Coleman, Doc's bass player for many years. The mood of the album gradually moves from trad songs (done with enthusiasm) through rock 'n roll to some very unexpected pieces, all done with refinement & sincerity. The generosity from Doc in subtlely pushing his son towards the forefront of the performances allows the listener to appreciate a remarkable talent on banjo, slide & acoustic guitars. Yet another version of 'Black Mountain Rag' confirms the technique of both son & father, but I recommend 'Southern lady' to listen to - a great arrangement superbly sung & played (& somewhat of a surprise to those used to Doc's 'typical' albums).
The album notes avoid any maudling about Merle's premature death by not refering to it at all! Specific recording dates are missing unfortunately.

Format: Audio CD
I'm surprised this one isn't higher on the best selling list or reviewed more - T. Michael went through 100s of concert tapes and put together a "show" that culls from 6 years of tapes - I love it - there are 17 tracks some with a full band (the frosty morn boys). Michael did a fine job of blending the songs from one to the next. The first six songs are just Doc & Merle, banjo, guitar, slide - then Michale Doc & Merle for four songs and then the Frosty Morn boys close out the selections. For reference - My collection includes Red Rocking Chair, Memories, Doc & Dawg, Docabilly, Remembering Merle, Doc & Merle's Guitar Album, Lonesome Road & Look Away - Trouble In Mind Country Blues Collection, Doc & The Boys, Live n Pickin, Best of Sugar Hill Years, Portrait, and On Stage - those are the CD's. I have a few others on vinyl - Elementary, Will The Circle, and Southbound. On Remembering Merle there is a sweet, sweet picture of Rosalee Doc and baby Merle in their arms that just broke my heart this morning - in a good way! The album concept for Remembering Merle was Rosalee's and for that alone its worth picking up.
