Book Description

June 2, 2003 10 and upPhyllis Fogelman Books
The prophets are some of the most revered figures in the Hebrew and the Old Testament Bibles. In this beautifully illustrated book for the whole family, Marianna Mayer explores the life and prophetic messages of each of the major and minor prophets, offering a picture of the historic time in which they prophesied, along with a sampling of their words and visions. This handsome book was carefully researched and written so that it can be appreciated by Jewish and Christian readers alike, and a treasure trove of classic paintings adds greater inspiration to these prophets' timeless message.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Marianna Mayer adds to her list of picture book reference works about biblical themes with the beautifully designed Remembering the Prophets of Sacred Scripture. Elegantly printed with red and gold accents, the text reviews the contributions of the prophets, from Moses to Elijah and Elisha, from Amos to Malachi. As in past volumes, Mayer pairs her writing with masterpieces of European art, so that insets and single pages introduce works by Rembrandt, Renaissance paintings, illuminated Bibles, Byzantine mosaics and more.

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-10-Mayer gives what biographical details are known about each of the major and minor prophets, including Moses, Elijah, Elisha, and Samuel. Context, the main points of the prophet's message, and a quotation or two complete each entry. There are some beautiful portraits here, by well- and little-known artists. Yet the thinness of the narrative, the relative lack of drama in the color paintings, and the distance of the subjects from readers combine to make this work less impressive than the author's other religion/art books. Several pages have errors (from "eminent" for "imminent" to dangling modifiers). Audience confusion is also possible: the text content and style are more advanced than the picture-book format signals. Both historical and "literary" prophets are significant contributors to Western culture, and this book may help stem the tide of biblical illiteracy, but it is a minor title in the Mayer canon.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really superior book, January 6, 2009
This review is from: Remembering the Prophets of Sacred Scripture (Phyllis Fogelman Books) (Hardcover)
This wonderful book was written with the young reader in mind, but is really an excellent resource for any reader, Jewish or Christian. The book contains short biographies of each of the Major and Minor Prophets, the 5 "literary" prophets who have books by them in the Hebrew and Old Testament Bibles (Amos, Hosea, Micah, etc.), plus four special prophets who were major figures in the Bible's narrative - Moses, Samuel, Elijah and Elisha. Along with the biographies are various old works of art that contains representations of the Prophet.

Overall, I found this to be a really superior book. The pages are done in an elegant yellow and gold motif, with the colorful illustrations providing a really great addition. Now, two things, first of all, I said that this book would be a good resource for a Jewish reader, and I believe that because the book is careful to restrict itself to the "Old Testament," with the exception of the Prophet Daniel, who I gather is not in the Hebrew Bible. Secondly, I said that this would be a good resource for any read of any age, and I believe that because it really is a good, jet-speed introduction to the Prophets, giving a quick and informative introduction to each.

So, as I said, this really is a superior book, one that I think would make a great read for any young believer, or even a believer who does not know much about the prophets.
