Editorial Reviews

From the Author

During the difficult time after our beagle died in April 2003, I was unable to find a book on pet loss that our family could share; nothing "spoke to me". That summer, I wrote a book on the subject-geared towards families with young children-after it occurred to me that writing our story would be therapeutic while also helping other families going through the same thing. My story, accompanied by black and white photographs and the stunning cover designed by my sister, has been transformed into a book that I know will make an impact on families of all kinds.

About the Author

Melisa Wells wrote Remembering Ruby: For Families Living Beyond the Loss of a Pet shortly after losing 13-year-old Bijoux to cancer, when it seemed difficult to find "just the right book" on pet loss for her sons. She is a freelance writer and lives in the Chicago suburbs with her husband Jim and their two sons. The Wells Family now includes another dog, a beagle named Roxie.

In keeping with the familial theme of Remembering Ruby, Melisa chose her sister Julie Witcoff to create the cover and interior design of the book. Julie is a graphic designer, photographer, and web-blogger. She has used her design talent on many things --a board game, greeting cards, product packaging, posters, travel brochures, and wrapping paper to name just a few--but this is her first children's book.

More About the Author

Melisa Wells was born and raised in Chicago until she was ten years old. She lived in Ft. Worth (Texas), Knoxville (Tennessee), Norfolk (Virginia), and Kenosha (Wisconsin) before returning "home" sixteen years later, with her husband and two sons. She has been making up for lost time ever since.

Her first book, called "Remembering Ruby: For Families Living Beyond the Loss of a Pet", was written for families with young children after the passing of her beagle, Bijoux, and the day it was published was one of her proudest.

Her second book, "Chicken in the Car and the Car Won't Go: Nearly 200 Ways to Enjoy Chicagoland with Tweens and Teens", was a true labor of love, coming together as she researched all the fun ways to spend time with her family in her hometown.

Melisa is also a freelance magazine writer, contributing feature articles about salon and spa management to "Nailpro" and "DAYSPA". She has also written for "Chicago Parent: Going Places".

Melisa has blogged about parenting her teens at Suburban Scrawl since 2007, and is a contributing writer at The Chicago Moms blog. She is active in social media, especially on Twitter, where you can find her at @melisalw.

Though she currently lives in the western suburbs of Chicago with her family, Melisa makes time for city visits as much as possible, during which she does not stop grinning from ear to ear. Her husband believes she needs an intervention.

Wonderful, wonderful book! October 21, 2007
Format:Paperback
This is a tender, warm and touching book that can help children and their families work through the loss of a cherished pet. It is also a wonderful look at a family's life and how their pet is such an integral part of them. The style of the book makes it even more approachable and gives readers the ability to better relate to the content. Very worthwhile!

A touching resource November 23, 2007
Format:Paperback
For those who have lost a pet, we know the devastation it can bring, and at times the embarrasment experienced for feeling this way about "just a dog" or "just a cat." Remembering Ruby is a great resource for families to help them not only understand that it is OK to love your pets and experience loss when they leave us, but to give some ideas about how to deal with that loss in a positive way. It is written quite simply, and is filled with photographs. Since we have not figured out how to extend the lives of our pets, and pets continue to grow in importance in the lives of families, this book is a fabulous resource to be added to any household library. We are adding Remembering Ruby to our website's Suggested Readings list and will recommend it to our family of adopters and volunteers, who will go through this loss if they bring a pet into their lives. The kids and I loved this book. It was beautiful and tender and not at all depressing. I got all misty eyed at the obvious love this family had for their dog. My kids (ages 5 and 8) were so inspired by it they wanted to go off and write books about our cats. Ruby even made it into their pretend play for the next several days. This book is a must have for any child or family that has lost a pet.
