Review
Robert Wynne crafts his poems with such consummate skill and arranges them so seamlessly it is hard to believe Remembering How To Sleep is his first full-length collection of poetry. Beginning his collection with poems of early childhood and ending it with haunting lyrics about his marriage, honeymoon, and young daughter, he entrances his reader with the intimacy of a personal diary whose entries are nothing but passages of splendid poetry, ranging from the jazz-like elegance of free verse to the exquisite formality of the sonnet. Wynne s imagery is strikingly original, and his spare, seemingly simple narratives are deftly textured with allusions to Icarus, King Tut, Narcissus and Dali. Not to be overlooked are his brilliantly executed ekphrastic poems, inspired by photography, painting and sculpture, artfully juxtaposed with the domestic simplicity of ordinary life. It is no wonder that the judges selected this polished collection of poems for the Poetry Society of Texas 2006 Eakin Book Award. --Larry Thomas, 2007-2008 Texas Poet Laureate
