This is my all-time favorite book. The reader is excellent; he has a real feel for Proust and his writing, his diction is great--his voice and tone show that he understands the book very well and appreciates it.

I was disappointed that the book is abridged, but that's not his fault.

The book kept me alert on a recent 9-hour drive, plus return. Since I'm almost 77, I'm extremely grateful for that--and am delighted to have these wonderful CD's.

What a delightful discovery and a great piece of theatre! I have wanted to read the entire Remembrance of Things Past for many years. I read Swann’s Way in college in French (final exam was to write about Swann’s Way compared to the Guermantes Way) and started several times to read the entire novel in English, but quickly got side tracked. I cannot write about the quality of the abridgement, but listening to the 36 CDs as I commuted to and from work over the past few months has been quite satisfying and wonderful. The entire set is around 50 hours of listening time. The narrator, Neville Jason, is a fantastic actor. His voices are superb at bringing out the many personalities in the novel. I could never understand how Swann fell for Odette. With Mr. Jason’s throaty, seductive voice, I am finally convinced that she was irresistible! I love Mr. Jason’s choices for the Baron de Charlus’ voice. So amusing! The theme music for the Baron is perfect – very witty and appropriate. There are well chosen musical interludes throughout the CDs. The set comes with an 80-page booklet that contains a synopsis and commentary about the novel by Mr. Jason, details of the musical selections, Mr. Jason’s note about his abridgement, and an additional 3 CDs on the life and work of Marcel Proust. This last is a superb essay by Mr. Jason. If you have always wanted to enjoy the entire novel, this is a very accessible way to do it. Mr. Jason has now recorded an unabridged version of the entire novel with 120 CDs, clearly a labor of love!

I've read the books many times, and hearing them, word by word in my ear, is wonderful. The reader assumes the many different voices perfectly, there is never a doubt of the "speaker" - and although it is abridged, there is much material here and it delights me daily.

Proust abridged is an oxymoron, isn't it? A bit like looking at a Picasso only after rearranging the facial features. What a shame. Nicely produced, but buyer beware--this is not the entire novel.
