Inexpensive but design needs improvement,
By Kurt Feierabend (Rochester, MN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Remington 098031J 3.25 hp 16" Electric Chain Saw (Lawn & Patio)
The first thing I noticed is that the chain popped off often. Since the plastic oil applicator for the chain has a large surface that extends near the chain, the applicator was quickly ruptured by the chain. I spent the rest of the time oiling the chain by hand. Replacing the chain about a dozen times, I was able to cut down, limb, and chop up three relatively large pine trees (50' high) and a large overhanging branch of a box elder. After that the chain popped off as soon as the chain touched wood. I took it apart and found the plastic bearing inside the main gear was wiped. While the packaging and instructions lead one to believe that this chainsaw is a good general purpose chainsaw, I believe this chainsaw would be more suited for light duty jobs. It is inexpensive and would be more than adequate for limbing trees around an average yard. Hopefully the design problems will be fixed in the future.

Only light-duty use.,

I've used this for a few years now. It cuts light stuff great and the power of the motor suggests it would do bigger trees (up to 14") also but not so. The motor doesn't hold up when under load. Keep to small 6 inch branches or smaller and it will do fine. Mine went up in smoke a few days ago when cutting a large chunk of cherry into bowl blanks.

Not a heavy duty model,

This review is from: Remington 098031J 3.25 hp 16" Electric Chain Saw (Lawn & Patio)
Mine just burned up after a year of medium-duty use (branches and trees up to 12"). The chain did not keep its tension well, and did pop off numerous times. Also, the chain oil tended to drip constantly, causing stains on my basement floor in several places (yeah, I should have known better, but...). Anyway, I'm moving on to a "real" chainsaw, and I wouldn't really recommend this model unless you keep its use to a minimum and your cutting sessions not too long. And keep the chain sharp!!!

A poorly made toy,

I didn't have huge expectations of this chain saw, and I only bought it for occasional use on my 1/2 acre wooded property. This saw failed to meet my already low expectations. The Remington is severely anemic and can barely cut a substantial limb. To top it off, it's cheaply made. Mine broke after about 6 uses, and can't be fixed (a plastic part cracked during routine use). As noted by others, the chain falls off repeatedly and it needs constant adjustments. And it drips oil constantly, so put newpaper under it. There's a reason this chain saw is so inexpensive. It's not worth it, and not worth the convenience of an electric tool. For a few bucks more, you can get a gas saw that gets the job done and will last more than 1/2 season.

Why are people voting 5 stars?,

Like everybody else's: short-lived, leaks oil, and chain slips off frequently. Mine died in less than a month. Why are people panning this and giving it 5 stars? Reviewers: 1 star is the last item in the pulldown, not the first.

tough little saw,

I bought this saw last year and have cut down fairly good size trees and trimmed a lot on my 1 acre lot. After 3 hurricanes I had to get a 350 Husky because some of the trees are just too big, and there is much to do.But this little saw is still going and I use it a lot. Here are some tips that may prolong your electric saw's life: 1. Never run it continually for long periods so it does not get it real hot. It needs to have rest breaks. 2. After sawing for 10 or 15 seconds let up for 30 seconds or so. 3. Rotate the bar frequently and keep the oiler about 3/4 filled with motor oil__(manual recommends SAE 30W). 4. When rotating the bar, take off the chain drive sprocket and grease the needle bearing. (Be careful removing the sprocket so the needle bearing does not fall out). 5. Oily sawdust builds up very fast. Take off the chain cover and clean it out after every use, and re-adjust the chain. It only takes a few minutes. 6. Check your motor frequently to make sure it is not getting too hot. 7. Don't let the chain get too dull. Have it sharpened or replace it. 8. Above all....be safe. Don't cut with the tip.

Great for pruning and trimming,

This is a great chainsaw for the home user. It does a good job on small, ornamental trees and bushes. I would not recommend it for cutting down trees though. The motor is simply not powerful enough for that. This equipment is designed with the residential user in mind. I used mine to cut down some overgrown Hollys and Yew trees around the house. For that, the power is more than sufficient. And because it is electric, there is not nearly the maintenance that you would have to do with a gasoline-powered saw. However, monitor the chain tension frequently. Keep the tension adjusted according to the manual's recommendations. I also recommend that you empty the oil out of the unit before you put it in storage. Most chainsaws will leak its oil when stored for a long period.

Great for what it is intended for,

Strong for what is essentially a light duty saw; reliable. I've cut down two sizable trees with it, and cut them into firewood, along with a lot of other use. The only shortcoming I have found is the lack of a chain brake. Be careful to wait for the chain to stop before you do anything like setting it down after you release the switch.I've noted some small complaints in other reviews. To address them: The bar/chain oiler is GRAVITY FED...it will "leak" oil just sitting around...it is supposed to. The chain does lose tension with use. ALL chainsaws do, and you must keep an eye on it, the adjustment is easy. But careful tightening the bar nuts: they fit into a plastic housing that is easy to damage if you overtighten them. As with all other electric power tools, use a large gauge extension cord. For convenience, I use a 100' cord 12 gauge. With this saw, that still gives 115 volts at the end of the run, and causes no problem with the motor. A chainsaw is easily the the most dangerous power tool a homeowner will ever use! SERIOUS INJURY is a moment's carelessness away!!! FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS EVERY SECOND. And keep the cord well behind you as you work! And hold onto the manual! It should be reviewed regularly, is especially useful to replace the chain properly, and I haven't found it on the 'net anywhere.

Get a GAS CHAINSAW!!,

Chain slips constantly even after a few minutes of use. Constant chain adjustment makes it's use, time consuming and aggravating.Save your money and put it towards a small gas chainsaw or look at some better built electrics. I am sure that other compnaies make a much better electric saw. Good Luck! |
