Fantastic product!,
This review is from: Remington Short Cut Clipper Rechargeable, Cordless, Haircut Kit (Health and Beauty)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Alas, the days of needing to go to a hair stylist - or even needing a comb - are long gone for me. I've been cutting my hair at home for years since I don't see the point in paying someone to cut what little I have left. I've used traditional clippers and they work well, but it's almost impossible to cut your own hair using regular clippers - you need someone to help, especially on the back of your head.
The Shortcut trimmer solves that problem perfectly. It's no harder to use than a brush. Just adjust the setting to the length you want, then move it slowly across your head. It comes with two types of guides. One is for traditional hair cutting. The other is for shaving your head bald (or very, very close). You have to use the correct guide if you expect to get good results. The reviewer who had a problem with this clearly was using the incorrect guide. The manual explains this - always pays to take a minute to read the manual before using a product. Very easy to clean. The blades are washable (although the unit itself is not) or you can just brush out the hair with the cleaning brush. Not too loud - about the same as a conventional hair clipper. You get the best results if you cut just a bit at a time. For example, if you want to end up with 1/4 inch hair, start at the highest setting. After making a few passes , dial it down one notch. Repeat until you're at the length you want. Once you have your hair at the length you want, you can do a touch-up trim once a week to keep it at that length. Now that I have the hang of it, it takes me about 5 min to give myself a haircut. It also has a trimmer for sideburns and around your ears. It cuts well, but it can be a bit unwieldy to use around the ears. I have a smaller trimmer that I use for that. The trimmer on the Shortcut does do a good job on sideburns. So, with the caveat that you need to learn how to use it correctly, this is a fantastic product. Highly recommend.

If, for whatever reason, you want to avoid hairdressers and cut your own or your family's hair, then you will need more than one tool for the job. Clippers work well for longer hair and for the top of the head, but are very unsatisfactory for the back of the head and the neck. That's where the Short Cut comes in. You can now finish trimming that hair at the back, where the clippers left off. And very simple it is, too.
Of course, if you keep your hair all-over short, then you can use only the Short Cut and ditch the clippers. Just be careful to get the settings right, and only use the balding comb if you mean it. Be warned it comes fitted with the balding comb. Start with the lowest settings and cut gradually shorter if you want. It is light and easy to use, especially as it is used cordless. The charge does not seem to last very long, but you can keep it plugged into the charger between uses, as it cannot overcharge. The `green' charging light looks very blue to me. That, and some other shaky prose, lead me to think that the manual for this made-in-China product was written by someone whose first language was not English. Nonetheless, read it carefully before using the Short Cut, because it contains some useful information. [PeterReeve]

Even my wife can't complain!,
By Daniel Will-Harris (Point Reyes, CA United States) - See all my reviews In the past, my wife would trim my hair, apparently one hair at a time, because it would take a long time and often involve either hair pulling (probably not intentional but one never knows), and one time the removal of the top of my right ear. She would also never cut it short enough, so I'd start looking clownish a week after she'd cut it, and then have to risk my appendages again! I read about this online and thought I'd give it a try and I'M SO GLAD I DID! The box says, "You can't mess this up," and I figured if anyone could it would be me--but so far, I haven't. You basically comb your hair and it cuts it. The adjustable trimmer keeps everything the same length and keeps you from looking like your were in a fight with Sweeney Todd. One of the reviews here said it wasn't good for getting hair short--but I disagree--my hair was too long and this neatly cut it down to size. I've ever used it on my beard to keep it short and it's much faster than my beard trimmer! I started out on setting 2, so it was short but not short enough that my wife would complain. Then, yesterday, before my shower, I set it to 1 and let 'er rip. It trimmed a LOT of hair and in about two minutes my hair was very short--and even. When my wife saw me she didn't say "What on earth did you do to your hair?!?" which she would have if she could have found any fault at all. Instead, she had me turn around, inspected me and went, "It looks good." OK, so if a wife cannot complain about it, then you know it's good. Period. There is ONE thing that isn't as good as it could be--the pop-out trimmer. I tried to use it around my ears and it really didn't do much. I ended up using my beard trimmer for that. But the rest of it worked so well, so effortlessly (and quietly, it's not like some trimmers that sound like you've put a leaf blower next to your head), that I'm happy! Considering what a haircut costs, or the value of the top of an ear, this is a bargain! Now I can use it regularly, keep my hair under control and avoid any clownish coiffure!

Hair's the buzz,

The first thing that you should know about this clipper is that it's called the "Shortcut" for a reason, the reason being that it only works if you want a buzz cut with your scalp showing.
The second thing is that you should read the instructions before using it. It comes with the "balding comb" attached, so if you decide to charge it and start clipping, you're going to end up with a buzz cut. Pros: 1. It comes in an easy to open package that you won't need a chainsaw to open 2. It includes two combs, a cleaning brush, blade oil, a charging adapter and an instruction manual 3. It's compact and easy to hold 4. It doesn't come with a bunch of different sized cutter attachments, as it uses a 5 position zoom wheel to set the length of cut you need 5. It has a pop out trimmer for around the ears and neck area 6. It has a warning light to tell you when it should be recharged Cons: 1. It takes about 16 hours for a full charge 2. As mentioned above, it comes with the balding comb already attached, and unless you read the instructions first (or this review) you won't know that the adjustable hair length settings only work with the adjustable guide comb. If you need to trim longer hair, you MUST change the comb first. 3. It doesn't work well with the adjustable guide comb. It hardly looks as though it's doing any cutting at all, but in a very short time you'll find that the hair clogs up the comb, necessitating removing the comb and cleaning it out before continuing. (The comb is curved inwards at the top, with horizontal bars, and these trap the hair, clogging the blades) 4. It takes much too long to get the job done. 5. The pop out trimmer works, but is tough on tender skin. 6. The location of the "on" button makes it much too easy for accidental starting while popping out the trimmer or changing the combs. I wouldn't recommend this for anything longer than a buzz cut or complete hair removal. For longer hair that just needs a quick trim, there are better clippers available. For buzz cuts - 4 stars For longer cuts - 1 star Average - 2.5 stars Amanda Richards, August 7, 2008

BEST ELECTRIC DO-IT-YOURSELF HAIR CUTTER EVER,
By Critically, I would say it's a little expensive at about $30 for the black model and $40 for the crome one. It doesn't come with a travel case which I think would be a good idea and should be included for this much money. Still, if you're into short, uncomplicated hair cutting and doing it yourself, this is the state of the art, a quantum leap from what previously has been.

Almost perfect,
By
This review is from: Remington Short Cut Clipper Rechargeable, Cordless, Haircut Kit (Health and Beauty)
I saw an ad in a magazine for the Short Cut and thought it would be perfect for me. I've been buzzing my head for about a year now and I use no attachments so its as short as it gets without using a razor. I tried the Short Cut out this morning for the first time and I'll give it an A- overall.
It did seem to come with some sort of charge but I charged it overnight to be safe, didn't want to run out of battery halfway. As others may have pointed out be aware that the attachment installed when you first open it is the 'balding' attachment which will have no change if you set the adjustable numbers higher, its for super short only. Normally I cut my hair about every 5 days. I sometimes do it more often but waiting a few days in between makes it easier to see what's been cut and what hasn't. I used the Short Cut this morning after about 3 and a half days or growth. Overall impression is it works very well. Being that I wasn't taking much length off it did take a few more passes than normal to get everything but it definitely does clip on both the back and forth movements. What I really liked is there seemed to be no way to cut myself which is a constant worry with regular clippers. It took a couple minutes to figure out the best angle to get all parts of my head; some parts cut better front to back, some side to side. It just depends on the way your hair grows. What threw me off at first is it doesn't make as much 'grinding' noise as its cutting. Its quieter overall which is nice, although the 'grinding' sound is usually my audible confirmation that I definitely cut a patch of hair. The front and sides cut pretty easily but where this thing really shines is in back. It only took me about 20 seconds to do the whole back of my head. With regular clippers I'd do the back and then have to spot check with a mirror. The only real problem I had was with my sideburns. Maybe its just the shape of my head but I couldn't get it to sit low enough to get them. I eventually found a way of doing it but it put the Short Cut dangerously close to my eyebrows so I'll have to be really careful. There is another small flat trimmer that pops out of the top but it seems to be a little shorter than the curved blade so it might make my sideburns a tad too short, I'll experiment next time. Just for comparison I whipped out my old clippers to see how close the Short Cut actually cuts. The clippers did cut a tiny bit shorter but it was totally negligible, the hair that fell into the sink was as thin as powder so the Short Cut seems to trim just as short. Pros: -cordless -curved blades hug my head well and cut both back and forth -30 minutes of runtime is adequate for a couple uses before recharging -nicking yourself is almost impossible -fits very well in my hand Cons: -some places are hard to reach with curved blade -needs to be shaken out once a minute or so, the hair tends to fall in instead of out as you cut so it can get clogged up but a quick shake or tap clears it out. -no carry case included -relatively long charge time (says 14-16 hours for full recharge) Overall I like it and I'll use it from now on. The small size and cordless power is especially nice for traveling too :)

Clever,
By Mike K "technoguy" (Chicagoland) - See all my reviews

I have to say that I don't really like the bother of getting haircuts. I work very long hours as I'm the sole support for my family and I usually wait until I "have to go" and then I usually find one of those store front places like "Supercuts" or "Fantastic Sam's." The cuts from those places vary from pretty good to not so good.
In addition, I have been going bald for the last 20 years and now I only have a little tuft of hair up front and I finally decided that I had had enough and I asked the stylist to "buzz all my hair off." When she had finished I was surprised at how much I liked the look and how easy it seamed to cut it (it took her about 2 minutes). Later that week I went to Walmart and found the Remington and I have to say that it is a cleaver product that works well. It is small and lightweight and cordless. It basically looks like a brush. It is strictly designed for short hair cuts but it does those cuts well and you can adjust your hair length by turning a little thumb wheel on the clipper. In addition, it has a push out trimmer that also works well. You can actually cut your hair without a mirror and I tend to go into the tub to cut my hair and then take a shower to wash all the loose hairs down the drain when I'm done (the clipper in not waterproof). Because it is a small unit it doesn't have the power to cut through long hair. When my son wanted a haircut "like dads," I first had to cut his hair down to size with traditional clippers and then I did the rest with the Remington. Several neighbors commented how nice his hair looked! In addition you have to occasionally "tap out" your hair from the cutting mechanism during a cut. Lastly, the power switch is easy to accidently turn off when you are holding the unit. All of these "complaints" are fairly trivial. All in all, if you have a short "buzz cut" this device delivers at a reasonable price. Definitely recommended.

Great Clipper to Maintain Short Styles,
By
This review is from: Remington Short Cut Clipper Rechargeable, Cordless, Haircut Kit (Health and Beauty)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
The Remington "Short Cut" hair clipper is, just as the name implies, for short haircuts. I had been considering going to a shorter style for a while, and thought this would be a good opportunity to move in that direction. So I gave it a shot and was pleased with the result.
The longest finished length this clipper will allow is somewhere between ¼ and ½ inch. The adjustable length comb has ½ inch teeth, but the curved blade comes up into the teeth some way, making the finished length of the hair less than the length of the teeth. The depth of cut is controlled by a thumb wheel. Do not try to use this clipper if your hair has any length at all. If your hair is long enough to fall over on its own the clipper will just bend it over and won't effectively cut it. It is obviously intended to give an even trim to very short hair styles, with the hair standing up as it passes the blade. As others have noted, this clipper will not take you to a short hairstyle, but it will very effectively maintain one. If you have longer hair, your best bet is to go to a stylist for the initial cut and use the trimmer to maintain the look. While it won't replace professional haircuts, it will reduce the need for them from 8 to 12 times a year to one or two. The extendable trimmer works well for cleaning up edges and mowing around ears and other obstructions. You are still going to want somebody to help even-up things in the back for you. The unit is relatively quiet, does not heat up like many clippers do, and fully charges in about 14-hours. One charge is plenty to complete a good trimming. The teeth and blade are removable for cleaning and the instructions say the unit can be immersed in water for cleaning (although I didn't try it). You will want to do the trimming with a towel or other "drop cloth" around your shoulders and quite a few fine trimmings will end-up on the floor. When all is said and done the Remington Short Cut Clipper does the job, and will pay for its self with just a few missed haircuts.

A good single-purpose trimmer but inferior electrical components. And Remington knows it!
----- ORIGINAL 2008 REVIEW TEXT DELETED 24-NOV-09. ----- Purchased July, 2008. UPDATE March 2009: One day I noticed the blue charge light failed to light up when I plugged in the SCC-100R for a charge. I was able to draw 150 ma from the wall wart with no voltage drop; clearly something was amiss with the battery circuits in the trimmer. I followed the procedure outlined in the manual and sent it in for warranty resolution. They received it on March 16 and on March 29 a new one arrived. It cost me $7.11, plus packaging and a trip to the FedEx depot. Considering its almost 8 months of usage, two to three times a month, my original SCC-100R failed after less than two dozen duty/recharge cycles. I trust this was the result of substandard parts slipping under the QC wire and not poor engineering. I am hoping this new one will offer the years of service I've received and come to expect from my other rechargeable devices. Fortunately, the warranty is two years. If it happens again within this time frame, it's still covered but I won't be too wild about having to cough up shipping again. UPDATE November 2009: After 8 months, the second unit has failed in the same exact way the first one did again after less than two dozen duty cycles! The electrical components are clearly inferior; rechargeable consumer products have been on the market for almost 30 years. What's Remington's problem?? It's going back for a second warranty replacement. So far I've spent $14 on shipping which is half the cost of the original purchase. Rating drops to ONE STAR. UPDATE December 2009: Well, instead of a 2nd warranty replacement, I received a check for $34.99. And I'm out $14. This pretty well verifies that Remington does not have a working design available. The stub says, "Thank you for contacting us and we hope you will continue to use our products with confidence." I'm thinking... NOT! Not ever.

Great Concept, Poor Implementation,
By Smittie (Santa Cruz, CA) - See all my reviews The batteries in the clipper required 20 hours to charge and lasted about 15 minutes when the clipper was new. Within a few months the batteries would not last long enough to finish the hair cut. I ended up throwing the clippers away before the end of deployment. Remington has a great product. They need to put some effort into it and build in some quality. |
