Frustrating But Useful,
By Jeanne R Walkauskas (Haverhill, MA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Remington Express Set Hair Setter (Health and Beauty)
If you are looking for a small travel set, this is about the most compact I have been able to find. I like the small size of this set but I find it is frustrating to use because the rollers are so heavy - the weight of the rollers makes it difficult to keep the rollers in my hair and they often fall out. Also, the metal pins that hold the rollers on also get loose which again, causes the rollers to fall out of your hair. I phoned the manufacturer when I purchased this set to ask why on earth they had made the rollers so heavy. I was told the heating elements are in each of the individual curlers (!) and this is how they can make the unit so small (there is no heating element on the bottom of the set - it is instead inside each roller.) Be forewarned, if your hair is too short, the curlers will not stay in because of their weight. I had a shorter haircut once, and there was no way I could use this roller set - the curlers would absolutely not stay in! I compare this set to an old set of Clairol hot rollers I have that is the greatest. The Clairol hot roller set has very lightweight flocked rollers with a plastic band around each end that sits up and stays cool to the touch. Because the stay cool end band sits up, it's very easy to keep your fingers away from the hot part of the roller. It's easy to touch the hot part of the Remington blue rollers which is not much fun - it gets very hot and burns your fingers. Back to the Clairol rollers - they are very easy to use and stay in, but the set I have is a set of 18 which is way too big for travel. Clairol had the best rollers. Another neat thing about the Clairol set was, you could have small, medium, or large rollers and they all fit on the same heating pin. Some other manufacturers sets would come with certain size rollers that you could not change, for instance, they'd have 6 medium and 6 jumbo rollers and you have no option to change it. With the Clairol set, you could order any size rollers you wanted so if you wanted all small, or more jumbo or any combo you wanted, you could have it. If any manufacturers are reading this review, P-L-E-A-S-E produce a 6 or 8 travel flocked roller set like the old Clairol sets. They would sell like hotcakes! The Remington is the best I could find for now, so go for it if you have long (at least shoulder length) hair and can stand a little frustration with trying to keep the rollers in!!!

I have short hair, not ultra-short, but short, and I find that a few hot curlers can make a big difference in volume on "bad hair days." While I have a full-sized Conair curler set, I discovered that my travel set was really best suited to my hair length. So travel or not, this little set has become a real favorite.
What you get The Remington Travel Hair curlers come in a nylon bag with the heating unit build in. The top is clear and fastened by velcro. You pull it open and plug it in to start heating the rollers. On the side of the nylon bag is a smaller, oblong bag holding the roller clips. There are five medium rollers (about an inch in diameter) and five small rollers, about 5/8 inch diameter.) There are two sets of clips, pink for the large roller, white for the smaller roller. The clip fits around the roller, and has a tab to aid grabbing it for removal. The rollers turn from pink to greyish white when they are heated. They fit into the base over a socket with two prongs. They heat up in about 2 minutes. How they work The rollers claim to have "Ionic Technology" to reduce static and the frizzies. I find that my hair is indeed smooth when I take it out of the rollers. After I let the curls cool, I can style with no frizz. The ends of the rollers stay cool to avoid burning your head. They are a bit heavy. I leave the rollers in for five to fifteen minutes, by which time my hair is well-curled. Upsides, downsides To keep this set compact, there are only 10 rollers. I could use a few more, even with my short hair. The built-in travel bag is very well designed and compact for a suitcase or small bathroom. If you LOSE THE CLIPS, you can find a general replacement style of clip for about $10 at http://www.ballbeauty.com/remington_hair_setters.htm#CLIPS. I dropped two of my white clips and the cats apparently made off with them as trophies of their hunting prowess. So this is helpful to know where to buy more clips. The curls last long, though they aren't as stiff as with some of the more expensive, foam covered type of curlers.

Compact set, not good if you have long hair, thick hair or... most kinds of hair.,

I've been the owner of several Remington Express Sets in my lifetime. All of them have worked wonderfully. My issue with these rollers isn't their quality - they work excellently, heat up quickly and are very compact to store. The only problem is that instead of pins, they come with clippy-type holders to keep them in your hair. I suppose the clips would work okay if you have fine, short to medium length hair. I have shoulder length hair that's not very thick, and the clip holders would not keep the rollers in my hair.
I could only put a VERY small section of hair around the roller if I had any hope of it staying put on my head. Most of the time the clips would pop off and the roller would fall out if I so much as turned my head. Remington has another set of compact express rollers called "All That", which are almost identical in function, only they come with pins instead of the clips. If you're looking for something quality, compact and easy to use that will stay in your hair until YOU'RE ready to take them out, I'd recommend that set instead of this one.

Perfect for everyday and travel,

This is my 2nd set of these type of curlers. The last ones stayed with me for three years. They are so good, I stopped using the "big, home set" and use these type daily. Heat up fast, great lasting curl (particularly for hard to curl fine hair), and don't even need to leave them in that long.
Would have given them a 5 - but this set has the awful plastic clips that can leave a kink in the curl. Recommend getting or using a set of the old-fashioned wire clips that come with most non-travel sets if you want a smoother curl.

Little Rollers/Big Curl,
By Kathie/NY (Warwick, NY United States) - See all my reviews

These little rollers are amazing. The "Large" and "Extra Large" are generous terms. At first I thought they would not work for me--I have long hair. The rollers are very small and compact and pack easily. They also deliver great curls, mine lasted 2 days and were nicer than the large set ofrollers I use at home.

QUICK 'N EASY,
This review is from: Remington Express Set Hair Setter (Health and Beauty)
Whether travelling or at home these rollers are quick and easy. They heat in a trice and are cushioned for comfort. If you're toting them in a suitcase the roller case is compact (about 7") or if you pop them in your tote bag the case doesn't take up much room. This product performs well, and doesn't show any signs of giving out over time.

Roller Clips!,
By
This review is from: Remington Express Set Hair Setter (Health and Beauty)
This product works well making curls if you can get the clips to stay on the rollers. The old style had metal pins which kept the rollers in place. The plastic clips often fall off letting the roller fall out, leave clip marks (bend lines where the curl starts) on your hair and make the curler heavier. Great curl but bad clips. The curler set is quite compact and will take up little room in your bathroom and/or luggage. I think you can buy metal pins to replace the clips but then there isn't a storage area for them as in the previous model.

Repeat Purchaser,
This review is from: Remington Express Set Hair Setter (Health and Beauty)
I have purchased this set for the 3rd time and LOVE IT!! I keep looking for Remington products on-line because they are not available in my local area and this set is so unique. This product is so small and lightweight compared to those big bulky curler sets (like Mom used to use).
I love that I can see when they are hot/cold by the color. I love that they get really hot and really fast. They are also compact and easy to travel with. I have used this model set since it came in blue and I think another color before that in the mid-90's. I am on my 3rd set in 8+ yrs and will buy them again when these need to be replaced! I have long hair and lots of it. It's down below my shoulder blades and one length all over. I have a difficult time finding rollers that will heat up quickly and get hot enough to set and hold my hair without falling the second I take them out. This set does the trick and I can put them in and do my makeup and pull them out and voila! I did find that I need to buy larger clips because I have never been able to use those silly hairpin style clips with any set...too much hair. The new set I bought from Remington has some white clips that you squeeze and place around hair and roller, which I liked. Although they are still too small to hold all of my long hair, that is the type of clip that I buy large ones of from a local beauty supply store to use with the rollers. Two thumbs up for me!

Pretty Good curls for fine hair,
By Peachy (Hoboken, NJ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Remington Express Set Hair Setter (Health and Beauty)
I have very fine lair and a lot of it. My hair is a little below my shoulder and these curlers really do the trick. I only have to leave them in for about a minute or two for some nice waves. The set is small and it comes with 2 sets of clips - one for the big rollers and one for the small. Great size for travel, can squeeze into a suitcase and seem like it's not there.
The only issue is sometimes the clips leave a dent in your hair, so make sure you have a second after you take them out to adjust or undo the dent (looks like a tiny crimp horizontally). Overall, for the price, size and ease, I would definitely recommend it.
