Beware the dreaded "thwack",

This review is from: Remington RCSM-5 Fuzz Away Pro Fabric Shaver (Health and Beauty)
I've owned an inexpensive fabric shaver for many years, and although I couldn't exactly call it perfect, it did a really good job, all things considered. However, with the added burden of my son's school uniforms, it had been getting a little finicky, going on strike more often than not, clogging too easily and taking much too long to do the job. (I should add that the aforementioned uniforms are made from the material from hell, which seems to grow pills out of thin air until every square inch of surface resembles coarse sandpaper.)
So there I was, struggling along with shaver and brush, until one day I decided to retool my arsenal, and treat myself to some new firepower. After looking at all the models available on-line at this site, I settled on this one based on brand name, appearance and the reviews. Here's my report: 1. Appearance - Cool and modern looking, with a nice big cutting area and a big fat sliding on-off switch. A large transparent plastic receptacle catches oodles of lint. 2. Ease of operation - the easy grip handle is okay for smaller hands like mine, but I can see that people with large hands and fingers would have a hard time holding this shaver comfortably. 3. Price - Extremely affordable 4. Performance - This shaver is fast and gets the pills off quickly. Emptying the receptacle is easy, and so is putting in the batteries. The instructions suggest that you use only alkaline batteries and not the heavy duty ones. I used two high quality alkaline AA batteries, and was amazed by the speed and power of this little gizmo. Unfortunately, I think I gave it too much juice, because from time to time when it got hold of a particularly large and deeply-rooted pill, it also excavated a tiny chunk of material with a loud "thwack" sound. I subsequently replaced the batteries with a cheaper, less powerful brand, and even though it still occasionally bit too deeply, it was much easier to operate without damaging the fabric. Points to note: 1. Try it out on a small piece of fabric first. This product is not recommended for angora wool or textured knits et al. It's also not so good with thin polyester/cotton blends or cheap knits (like low quality polo shirts), but works well on twills and similar materials. 2. Make sure the fabric is laid out smoothly, preferably on a flat surface. Wild swipes with the shaver at areas of bunched-up cloth will result in the dreaded "thwack" sound and the loss of a little piece of cloth. 3. Read the instruction manual - it's in understandable English 4. Use inexpensive batteries which have less power than the ones that keep going and going. Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with this fabric shaver. It cuts fast and is very efficient in sucking up the lint and catching it in the receptacle, but one little slip on your part and those little holes will appear out of nowhere. Once you get the hang of it, I'm sure that you will find that this is another hand held battery operated toy that you can't do without. Amanda Richards, April 27, 2007

inexpensive and excellent,
This review is from: Remington RCSM-5 Fuzz Away Pro Fabric Shaver (Health and Beauty)
I bought the product based on the other reviews and because I desperately needed something to recondition some of my more expensive but pilled cashmere sweaters. It came from J&R in a very timely fashion and works so well I couldn't believe it. The pills came off my garments quickly and they look so much better.

A Life Saver for Sweaters,
By JKaye "Mom in MN" (Minneapolis) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Remington RCSM-5 Fuzz Away Pro Fabric Shaver (Health and Beauty)
I bought this product out of desperation as I was just about to throw away a bunch of sweaters that were covered in fuzzy stuff. I cannot believe how amazing it is, thanks to the shaver i have kept all my sweaters - even the old ones. This product is cheap to buy and works wonders!
