This saw is very light, and can be used one handed if you are cautious.

A recent severe ice storm left most of Louisville without power for days. Trees were down everywhere, including my front and back yard. Fortunately for me, my power was out only a few hours, but the large tree limbs littering the yard sent me in search of a chainsaw. Since I have a 100 foot, 12 gauge extension cord, I went looking for an electric. Most stores had nothing on the shelf, but I finally found a Lowes that had some of these Remington 14 inch saws left in stock. At $44 I figured I would grab one quick.

First, the box label defines the purpose of this saw: It is a "limb and trim" saw, and designed with that purpose in mind. Mine was fully assembled in the box. Basically, it was add oil, plug it in, put on leather gloves and safety glasses and get started. I have cut up most of a pine tree in the last two weeks, and this saw has performed perfectly. Most of the limbs I have cut up are between 2 and 6 inches wide, with a few that were 8 inches or so. No problem. Prop the limb on something to get it off the ground, push the trigger and 15 seconds later, the cut is made. This saw is very light, and can be used one handed if you are cautious. It is easy to control with one hand for limbing work. The manual oiler works. Push the bulb button and it will oil up the blade adequately. It will leak though, so put paper down on where you lay the saw, or drain the oil after use.

I would give this saw five stars, but I haven't had it long enough to judge its durability. For only $44, though, it has already paid for itself a couple of times over. I think it is a great addition to the garage, where, if need should arise, I can cut up some limbs that fall into the yard. Great value, so far great performance, yeah, just go buy one. It's a no brainer for the occasional user.

Edit to add 2/21/09: Lowes has an OEM replacement chain for this saw made by "Oregon" for $14, so it should be easy enough to replace if need be.

The saw will do what it's meant to do but remember, it's not a 16" gas powered Stihl. Don't push down hard: let the saw do the work. Keep the oil reserve full. I just cross cut a 9" cherry log so it does cut. I sharpen the chain after every other use. It's especially important to do that with these light-powered saws since there is no horsepower available to push a dull blade thru wood. If your expectations are realistic it will do the job.

i bought this saw in 2000/2001 on sale at home depot for $30-$40. I only intended to have it for 1 project (I assumed I would destroy it) which included removing 12-15 medium size trees in order to put a privacy fence in our yard. not only did it do a fine job of cutting the trees...i also cut thru random pieces of chain link fence (by mistake), ran the chain into the dirt/rock to cut stumps below the ground level and generally misused / abused this saw....again...i intended it to be somewhat disposable after my project was finished. it's now 8/9 years later and while i have replaced the chain 3 or 4 times...it still works like a champ. i am marveled by how well this thing has held up over the years. highly recommended.

i'm not sure if i have this exact model. mine fits the specifications of this saw. i own a humongous stihl and a smaller echo and they are gas-powered. i can no longer start machines that require pulling. so i had purchased this Remington, not expecting very much. a tree fell in the yard and we cut up the whole tree except about 4 feet above the roots. granted, we quit because we were tired. i bet it could have done more. when we finished cutting, the tree was about 15 inches in diameter. i just worked one side at a time.

one problem with this saw though, and there's no way around it. it will leak oil all over your shed. i just put it down on a plastic bag. also, i don't fill the oil all the way up. i kind of fill as i go.

i am online looking for another saw with a longer blade. I'm guessing it will be another Remington.

This small saw cuts very well. I'm using it to re-cut a lot of the pre-split or oddly shaped wood ordered for my small wood stove. Using with a 100ft, #16 ext cord. With an easy hand it will make it though anything I have.
It leaks oil badly regardless of the position it's stored in. I kept it in a cardboard box on top of a few rags because of the warnings of previous reviewers. They were correct.
There is a lot of initial chain stretch but it seems to have stabilized after three cutting sessions. After looking at the options at Home depot, I think they have a chain that will fit this saw but I haven't purchased it yet.

I purchased this saw to do light trimmings around my yard after an old gas powered saw gave out. Yes, it needs a properly sized extension cord and a wall outlet not too far away from the action. My first job was trimming the dead fronds off some queen palms. I like it as its weight is easily to operate one-handed high up the ladder. Obviously one doesn't 'push' the saw but let it do its work without hearing it slow down by being overloaded. Just common sense. From my short experience with it, I think it will serve me well for small work, like branches to 4" dia or so.
