I attacked Christianity critically from the rationalistic standpoint; hence I had to administer orthodox Judaism almost as many blows as orthodox Christianity. Miracles were not wonderful nor marvelous for me, and the Messiah was dismissed as a poetical fiction. The ascension of Jesus and the ascension of Elijah were equally important, or, rather, equally unimportant for me; therefore the orthodox became bitterly incensed at me.
