Flipping the script for "world music",
By
This review is from: The Remix Collection (Audio CD)
Born in Brussels, based in D.C., fluent in English, Spanish, French and Arabic; traditionally trained belly dancer and vocalist / songwriter, Atlas has collaborated with the likes of Transglobal Underground, Jah Wobble, Mick Karn, Love And Rockets and Juno Reactor while creating several solo albums as well. This exotic performer mines traditional Arabic and North African song structures but often transposes them onto modern techno and electronica compositions. This disc highlights her solo career via remixes from some very clever producers, including Talvin Singh, Youth, DJ Spooky, and several others. Very electronic and beat driven, but retaining the pleasingly exotic flavor of the source material.

Natacha kinds of mixes !!,
By Paris Huang "Paris" (Washington, DC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Remix Collection (Audio CD)
I have the French limited version of this album, which includes the remix of the hit which push Natacha to the godness of French market: "Mon Amie La Rose". Clearly, this is not a Dance Remix album, but more expermental, search for the boundry of Natacha'a music. Natacha herself had put efforts in this album, therefore I believe it does not "obey" whatever Natacha had done in her pas albums. You can easily find this attitude in the album Natacha worked with her husband "Foretold of a Dream". I like the remixes of "Duden", they had extended the mysterious feel of this song. And of course the remix of "Mon Amie La Rose" is terrific. I would recommand anyone who really understand Natacha's world to own this CD. It will let you get into her world even deeper.

Never hearing this cd, I picked it up anyway because I'm a huge Natacha fan and love everything she does. I was greatly pleased when I played this cd because although they are all remixes of great songs, they don't sound like the originals (and the remixes of the same song on this cd sound different from each other). They are very pleasing to the ear though with their techno sounds and that awesome touch of middle eastern tune! I look forward to more Natacha cds; her voice is incredible and I can't get enough of it!

Wonderfully imaginative and refreshingly musically creative,

This maybe a "love it or hate it" album for Natacha Atlas fans. I loved it. It is musically creative with perhaps a more minimal vocal element; but Natacha's vocal presense is, as ususal, ridiculously beautiful. The electronic music aspect of the album is highly enjoyable and fascinating...If you like electronic lounge music with middle eastern sounds and rhythms, along with Natacha's wonderful voice, then you would perhaps really enjoy this album. I find it to be a gem.

Eh. Unusual but underwhelming remixes...,

Not what I expected & definitely not what I hoped for. Natacha Atlas' 1998 'Gedida' & 2001 'Ayeshteni' CDs have real dance grooves, strange enough to keep you wondering, heavy enough to keep you dancing. You'll find no unreleased tracks here - this is a CD of remixes - but don't be fooled, it's not a dancefloor record or a club record. It's more an opportunity for respected British DJs to completely rework and deconstruct most everything Natacha Atlas. Her vocals often become minor elements of the mix, floating in and out, processed, valued tools in a mix that I would definitely file as Pro Tools experimentation. I'll admit I'm not in pace with break-beats, or really any mix that doesn't propel a bass groove. There's so little groove on this adventure and I cannot recommend it.Still, it's interesting that most of the 'Remix Collection' takes on songs that were never highpoints of any Natacha Atlas CD. (Three mixes of "Yallah Chant" alone, and other tracks less memorable in their original form.) That DJs would totally rework minor Atlas songs is admirable - just don't expect amazing dancefloor results. Personally, I traded this CD within a week of purchase.

Giving a new spin to Atlas,

This is the second remix album I ever got (after DJ Cheb I Sabbah's "Maha Maya:Shri Durga Remixed." I still enjoy it.
While it has repetitive clunkers such as 16B's remix of "Amulet" and Spooky's "Duden",it is,overall,a fun new spin on the music of Natacha Atlas. Talvin Singh, pioneer of the Asian Underground, gives an Indian sound to "Duden" (he also collaborated with Madonna in her great "Cyber-raga")."Yalla Chant" gets three marvelously diverse new versions. The Youth remix is throbbing, perfect for the dancefloor. The Banco de Gaia remix is serene trip-hop.The Transglobal Underground turns it into trance-like bellydancing. The Bullitnuts version of "Bastet" is alright.TJ Rehmi pares "Amulet" down to its basic elements. "The Remix Collection" is perfect for those who already have the music of Natacha Atlas (and can listen to the originals),and as a further exploration into Arabic dancefloor music.

If I could only buy one cd to represent the so called asian underground, this would be it. This music will alone make you high. Natacha's vocals are penetrating and moving. I get chills when I listen to this. It is upbeat and dynamic.
