Biography

The Sami people, divided by the borders of Finland, Norway, Sweden and the Russia are from a region so far north that it is often missing from weather maps on television. They have a culture which is rich with storytelling, teaching, poetry and songs.

Mari Boine is an exciting voice to emerge from this little-known culture. Her music is rooted in the Sámi heritage, but to this strong, almost… Read more in Amazon's Mari Boine Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing, July 21, 2003

This review is from: Remixed (Audio CD)
When I first put this CD on, I thought I was listening to some music from Asia or North Africa. Then I happened to see in the fine print, "To learn more about cool and interesting Nordic music..." NORDIC?!? For sure, "cool and interesting" are appropriate adjectives to describe this fresh sound. All mixed in these tracks I hear elements of world beat, darkwave, alternative dance/electronica, jazz, and an overall underground kind of sound. In a couple tracks I hear sounds reminiscent of Digital Bled and Stereolab. This is an ethereal, beautiful downtempo dance album that also works as an album to listen to with headphones in your easy chair.

Favorite tracks? Hard to choose! Cuovgi Liekkas (#2) sounds like Native American chanting toward the end. Alddagast Ipmilat (#4) displays soft, close-miked vocals with inflections similar to what you might hear from Bjork. Gulan Du (#7) is great with its Digital Bled-like Middle Eastern instruments and shuffling drum beat, mixed with the kind of space-lounge sounds Stereolab has used. Mun Da Han Lean Oaivamus (#8) has a great bass line, one that reminds me of a track from the 1972 album A Clockwork Orange by Walter Carlos. This song begins with a touching description by the vocalist of what it's about. (Hint: a fresh take on the situation in South Africa sometime back.) Vuolgge Mu Mielde Bassivarrai (#9) has some fabulous percussion--coupled with a good bass line and shimmering electronics--to give you a swaying, unique dancing experience. This would go great next to a song by Digital Bled.

So many songs I listed as my favorites...and I still like the others too. A fascinating CD. Float away as you dance and listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars electro-triping-dub, February 2, 2005

I bought this album because i am a huge laswell/wobble fanatic and i have never heard a remix by them i dont like. This is nordic music by mari that remixed in a verry trip-hop electronic with dub flare. The 1st song is quite trip-hopin with light strings smooth bass and dub effects, mari dosent really sing in this song only really mutters a continuous phrase. The 2nd song is my man jah wobble with his traditional dub style bass with strings and deep percussion, resembles peter gabriels soundtrack work with wobble, thats beautifle. 4th song is verry reminiscent of the electronic german artist pole with light piano and sounds like a harmonium and strings. 5th song sounds right out of some techno comilation with congas, electric piano, deep fast bass and flamanco guitar my opinoin kinda cheezy but not horrible. 6 is the best song laswell in his regular reggae dub tastic fashion deep dub bass ecoed guitars/keys soft strings and sounds like the udu drum. 7 is also a regular laswell-ian and world renouned trumpet player nils peter molvaer, this song is trip-hop with dub effects and his signature trumpeting and light electric piano, violin. 8 has the only english in it as she tells the origin of the song and the meaning ill let her explain, The fastest song on the album it is reminiscent of asian underground style with guitars and techno-ish synth. 9 is the 4th best song verry deppely organik percussive with light synth. and the last song is verry ambient with light electronics and light drums. All in all one of the best remixes not the same old stuff. Any fan of laswell/wobble will love this and need to own it. Verry worldy with lots of electronic, percussion and excellent strings. Mari sings all songs in her nordic tongue. She sounds kinda like a cross between bjork and the female vocalish in the band portishead verry beautifle. These songs are spread out through the mari catalogue. enjoy

1.0 out of 5 stars WANTON DESTRUCTION OF BEAUTIFUL MUSIC, August 15, 2005
This review is from: Remixed (Audio CD)
If you like Mari Boine's other CD's - don't buy this!
I have all her music - she is very talented musician who has captured the essence of geography, time and rhythm in her music.
This Remix is an electronic trip - the "music" and Mari's great voice are overwhelmed by the psychosis of the musicians inflicting their poor taste on what was exquisite.
If this is where we are going Global Warming and the end of the world can't come fast enough!
