Back in 1999, I started playing with loop sequencing and over the years have assembled a few dozen tracks. I most recently started getting hardware to support my music endeavours, and I stumbled across this book in a bookstore. When I flipped through it, I knew this would be the one as it covered all of the aspects of remixing and editing. Going in depth, arguably its best chapters are on sound design and mixing. I have discovered a new language, and now I can go back to all of my computer music magazines and actually understand what they are talking about. Knowing how to visualize what you are doing to sound made all the difference for me and now I can program my own synths.

The other aspect I really liked about this book was that the tips from real musicians were particularly englightening. Seeing how deep these other musicians go to get their sound inspired me to become more flexible in my approach to writing music.

Definitely a great buy.

I really enjoyed reading Fracis Preve's "The Remixer's Bible". He keeps it light and fun while still giving you a ton of tricks and insight into remixing and sound design. I would recommend this book for beginners to experts. I also really like the history lessons around certain sounds and the gear that was used to make it. I also like the format of the book as its broken up into lots of smaller sections that you can read and then try out.

5.0 out of 5 stars finally a book that isn't for beginners, January 3, 2008
By
This review is from: Remixer's Bible Build Better Beats - Book/CD (Paperback)
I was glad to actually come across a book that was catered towards people who had a bit of experience with making beats. Most of these sorts of books are always for people who want to start from scratch. It's not like it's a book for experts and beginners can't pick this up, infact it could be useful to most. People with a lot of experience could find something in there worth the buy, and people who are relatively new to the world of remixing, (but really it caters to beat making in general) or have some experience under their belt, should be able to find a whole lot of useful information.

As cheesy as the title might be, this book is quality.

There are a few things about this book.

As a book / collection of essays / stories - it's great. It's a book to kick back and read that answer your questions if you ever wanted to know how a DJ who's name cannot be mentioned ever tackled a remixing challenge without actually mentioning anything about HOW they did it, how long it took or where they mind was at. There are a few paragraphs from Artists of actual talent answering the question of how they remix - most of which answering with a 'oh you know, played about a bit until it came to me'. Thanks for no help whatsoever.

As an instructional textbook or something valid of instruction, it is useless. It mentions plugins or software although barely touches on them. Its like it acknowledges their existence, occasionally outlines what something does or how a sound changes the track then moves on to a pointless interview. I went through the first few chapters with a notebook in hand, hoping to retrieve vital tips for my own work, after getting to the half way point and finding the book really only repeating itself, I closed my notebook and thought about the money I'd just wasted. It teaches you nothing of the art of remixing and without a knowledge of dance music anyway, it is a pointless exercise as you're not going to know who the author is talking about nor the tracks that are mentioned. His outlining of his experiences were like a teenager talking about their personal exploits during School Camp without ever mentioning which mates sister he managed to score a feel, nor which base he managed to get to.

The only thing I got anything from this book/CD was ONE Artists breakdown of one track on the CD. Which I sadly, could have found something similar for myself through actual instructional websites or tutorials that would have broken this down further into lessons, MIDIs and give you some form of guide to be able to make something for yourself. With this ONE tune, without ANY instructions is broken down to depict the 5 main elements of its construction. All in WAV form they are unless you have a ear like Mozart and a thorough understanding of your production software you're barely going to know where to start.

In short - I'm seriously disappointed. Although it's 'nice' to know how artist XYZ felt about the idea of having to remix a tune for a 6 figured sum, it leaves nothing for the imagination nor passion of the reader. You're left with this feeling of having a carrot dangled in front of you (as in being taught something) and left watching the artists kick back with a cocktail munching on that carrot saying 'oh, I'm sorry - did you actually WANT something? Sorry I'm busy being famous.'

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable!, February 4, 2009
This review is from: Remixer's Bible Build Better Beats - Book/CD (Paperback)
The Remixer's Bible is a must have for serious remixers and audio enthusiasts in general! The Bible comes chock-full of wonderful tips and tricks from professional remixers and engineers.

From stutter-edits, to gated effects, to LFO modulated filtering, to "that 80's sound", and way too much more to be mentioned, The Bible offers more tips, tricks, and insight than you could ask for.

The book is essentially a series of articles taken from Keyboard magazine. They are neatly categorized by content so the book can be read cover to cover with a feeling of cohesiveness.

Beware: the book is not intended for beginners! Half of the articles will not make sense to beginners in the area of remixing.

There is a wealth of knowledge in this book. For intermediate to advanced remixers, this is a must have.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book - not just for remixers, October 12, 2008
This review is from: Remixer's Bible Build Better Beats - Book/CD (Paperback)
I was looking for some content on exactly what the title says, making better beats.I was surprised to see the level of detail that this book covers compared to other such books on remixing. If your into mixing and need some solid tips and techniques used in the trade, this book has them. The downside (and the reason i give 4 stars and not 5) is that the content is getting older. In an industry where technology changes in less than an year, Im skeptical about the validity of the content in some of the articles published in late 90s, that this book carries.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good all around knowledge, January 21, 2009
This review is from: Remixer's Bible Build Better Beats - Book/CD (Paperback)
The ReMixers Bible gives brief information on many topics but does not deliver as advertised. Instead of getting in depth information about remixing, the book hits every subject without getting into the nuts and bolts. This is a good book for someone looking to gain overall knowledge of recording but if you are looking to get more info on the remixing process, you may want to look elsewhere.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buy Dance Music Manual instead, October 2, 2008
This review is from: Remixer's Bible Build Better Beats - Book/CD (Paperback)
I purchased this thinking it was going to go farther with insider tips but it is basically the abridged version of the dance music manual and the guy just puts little side sections of what the bigger names have to say and they really don't say to much!!! I wish I would've not even wasted my money!!!!!!!!!
