The Vocals. The Beats. The Blank CD.,
By Mark T (St Louis, MO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Remixes 2002 - 2005 (Audio CD)
Great companion to their earlier Remixes CD. Terrific vocal performances. Beats that stay interesting. Change-ups that crackle with energy. All with a deep, chill attitude and unmistakeable groove.
But where Jazzanova really breaks new ground is the inclusion of a blank "DIY" CD-R. The accompanying text invites you to either: use that blank CD to rip a copy for a friend(!!!); or to go online, download some special Jazzanova tracks and burn 'em to the CD-R for yourself. Now that's cool...

I had never heard of this group until I ran accross a review of their music in a magazine I was reading. I decided to take a chance and...WOW! I loved it! Great music with a wonderful mix of jazz and R&B. I am definitly looking into buying more of their music.

Anyone who like any of Jazzanova's CD's will enjoy this. Buy the Secret Love CD's for a glimpse at their influence and direction. They have fabulous rythym and insight.

Have to say I was a little disappointed with one review describing the process to download tracks from website then burning to blank CD provided as mission impossible.
I would have to say I had absolutely no problem at all getting the bonus tracks, and man, TOTALLY WORTH IT! Great album altogether. So groovy! If you already have this CD, you know what I am talking about. If you don't, then what are you waiting for??? AWESOME!!!

Jazzanova - The Remixes 2002-2005,
This review is from: Remixes 2002 - 2005 (Audio CD)
Jazzanova never fails. If there's a single that says "featuring a Jazzanova remix," you can rest assured of the quality. So on this, the second collection of their remixes, they don't disappoint. They range from the mellow funk on Heavy's "Wonderlove (For Minnie)" to the thicker beats of Status IV's "You Ain't Really Down." There seems to be much more emphasis to their the R&B and soul sides on this collection, perhaps reflecting their own increasing interest in working with vocalists. But with luminaries such as Roy Ayers and Shaun Escoffery, the quality remain undiminished. The electro on "Flashback" by Fat Freddy's Drop gives way to some nice synthesized horn stabs. Eddie Gale's "Song of Will" gets a moody jazz treatment, with the chorus swirling and filling the sonic space between beats, while Marcos Valle's "Besteiras Do Amor" surprises by not showing its Brazillian heritage until halfway through the track. They take a huge risk with their glitch-western mix of Calexico's "Black Heart." The glitch theme continues with their take on the Free Design's "Lullaby," a dreamy track that exists somewhere in the ether. Marvelous.
