2.0 out of 5 stars Such a wasted use for an album
I have been a huge MC fan since 1993. I own all her albums. This, however, was a joke! Instead of putting the full length remixes on the 1st CD, they should have included the shorter "edit" versions to make room for RARE remixes that most folks haven't heard (aka Butterfly, Butterfly (Reprise), Do You Know, Emotions, Fantasy, The Roof, ABMB, Can't Take That Away, etc.)...

I wouldn't classify myself as a huge fan of Mariah Carey, but this much is certain: she usually releases some pretty impressive remixes. "The Remixes" doesn't boast any new material: it's an unmixed compilation of previously released club mixes that cover her entire career to date. Most of the tracks appear in their full length version and are divided between 2 discs: one is house music and another is hip hop. Maybe it's because I'm biased towards house music, but I found the first disc to be the more enjoyable of the two. David Morales near dominates this set with some impressive re-workings of cuts like "Dreamlover" and "Fantasy." I'm not a huge fan of the original versions of either of these songs, but Morales gives these cuts his own disco flavor to make you forget the banality of their lyrics. Disc two is for the hip hop heads, and there's enough good stuff on this disc to make it noteworthy. Some standouts include the remix of "My All," which segues into a remake of the Loose Ends classic "Stay Awhile," and "Thank God I Found You" more than liberally samples Keith Sweat's "Make it Last Forever." The disc closes with one of 2003's catchiest singles, "I Know What You Want" featuring Busta Rhymes. The 13 cuts on this disc are pretty enjoyable samples of radio-friendly hip hop, although not all are remixes. "Sweetheart" (with Jermaine Dupri) and "Crybaby" (with Snoop Dogg) both appear in their original versions. I didn't seem to mind that, for they blend in with the rest of the other tracks nicely. While "The Remixes" doesn't really present anything new, it's a pretty good compilation of Mariah's club hits.

5.0 out of 5 stars US Release Coming Soon, September 8, 2003
By
Danielle Turchiano (Van Nuys, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
This Remix Album is NOT from Mariah. Do not be fooled! Tommy Mottola over at Sony Records put it out in yet another attempt to capitalize off of her talent. The reason the album has not yet been released in the US, rumor has it, is because he is having trouble getting the rights to one of her songs off "Charmbracelet." There is no doubt that vocally and lyrically Mariah is on top of the game. She is the most talented singer I have ever heard. These remixes do not do her justice, but they do offer some really funky and fun renditions to some of her now considered classic songs. Stay Awhile and Make It Last alone will make the album worth buying. They are very different from the original songs, so they are almost like their own song and not really a remix. This album is worth buying if you are a diehard Mariah fan. However, it sours the experience a bit to know that Mottola will be profiting from the sale. Also, look for the US Release, which is now scheduled to be released in October 2003, because that will be one to get, too, if you are a collector. However, if you absolutely can't wait, and you want the few extra tracks on this Import, then order it now. Personally I think any CD Mariah sings on is worth buying.

4.0 out of 5 stars Essential Remix Album For True Mariah Fans, November 2, 2003
By
Busy Body (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Remixes (Audio CD)
Being the huge Mariah Carey fan that I am, I rushed out a few weeks ago and bought this CD the day it was released. I wasn't expecting much because Remix albums never impress me much, but I have to say that I am rather pleased with this purchase. No way is this my favourite Mariah album, I don't even think I'd include it in a list of my top 10 albums by her, but it is a good remix album which brings together some of Mariah's biggest hits from the past ten years on two discs of superb Mariah remixes. Such is the popularity of Mariah Carey's remixes that you get two discs here for the price of one. Disc One features nine dance remixes that are made for the clubs, while Disc Two has twelve R'n'B classics from Mariah in the latter part of her career.

Disc One starts off with the brilliant "My All - Morales 'My' Club Mix." Thunderous beats and gospel-style vocals from backing singers work wonderfully with Mariah's soulful voice on this original ballad, reworked for the clubs. "Heartbreaker/ If You Should Ever Be Lonely - Junior's Heartbreaker Club Mix" is up next and runs for more than ten minutes of disco perfection. "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise) - Fly Away Club Mix" is an extended version of the reprise that is featured on Mariah's 1997 Butterfly album. This version isn't as good, but the vocal styles and instruments half way through are wonderful. "Anytime You Need A Friend - C&C Club Version" and "Fantasy - Def Club Mix" are up next, but don't quite live up to the standard we have seen so far. "Honey - Classic Mix" is exactly as it says, classic! The beat drives the song totally. "Dreamlover - Def Club Mix" is just weird! The rhythm at the start sounds so camp and old that you can't help but like it. Her vocals dip and rise all over the place, and it works rather well. "Emotions - 12" Club Mix" and "Through The Rain - HQ2 Radio Edit" work well to round off this first disc.

Disc Two opens with "Fantasy - Featuring O.D.B." which is the classic R'n'B remix. "Always Be My Baby - Mr. Dupri Mix Featuring Da Brat & Xscape" is a slowed-down, mid-tempo version of the original, while "My All/Stay Awhile - So So Def Remix Featuring Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz" is one that I have being playing to death. It rules beyond belief. "Breakdown - Featuring Krayzie Bone & Wish Bone" is the original version, while "Honey - So So Def Mix Featuring Da Brat & JD" is also featured on some special editions of the Butterfly album. "Loverboy - Remix Featuring Da Brat, Ludacris, Twenty II & Shawnna" is a fantastic party track, which ultimately saw the demise of Mariah's career in 2001. The highlight of this disc comes with "Heartbreaker - Remix Featuring Da Brat & Missy Elliott." This is the version you see in the black and white version of the video, the R'n'B remix which you just can't help but groove to. "Sweetheart" is just the original version, "Crybaby - Featuring Snoop Dogg" featured on the Rainbow album and "Miss You - Featuring Jadakiss" is another highlight with it's cool and funky beats. "The One - So So Def Remix Featuring Bone Crusher" is an awesome remix of the original version from the Charmbracelet album, and the album closes with the huge hit "I Know What You Want - Busta Rhymes & Mariah Carey Featuring Flipmode Squad."

OVERALL GRADE: 8/10

The only think that stopped me from giving this album five stars was the fact that quite a few songs on Disc Two are songs we either already had on previous albums, or remixes that aren't quite good enough for this album. This album has flopped in the charts both in America and Britain because of a lack of promotion. Mariah did not need telling about the release of this album, as it was all planned by her ex-husband, the rat Tommy Motola! In the end Columbia, Sony, Virgin, Def Jam and Mariah herself joined forces and the album was finally released! Disc One has some of the club remixes that you can listen to when you want to get your groove on, while Disc Two is a treat for all hip-hip/R'n'B fans and is perfect for chilling with mates to. This is essential for Mariah Carey fans, but not for casual listeners. There's something for every Mariah fan here, a worthy purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!, October 15, 2003
This review is from: Remixes (Audio CD)
This is the best remix cd that has come out, and will ever come out. It's completely different from your ordinary Remix album, where mariah actually included club mixes, which get you up and movin. Her hip hop based second disc is amazing, which never before heard remixes such as "Honey" (so so def remix), which is one of the better remixes. Or classic remixes such as My All/Stay Awhile, which is some of the first taste of real hip hop that mariah hit us with, (outside of her colabo with odb.) On the first disc, "Heartbreaker/If You should Ever Be Lonely" is addicting! I'M HOOKED! ALL TOGETHER YOU WONT FIND A REMIX CD LIKE THIS...THIS IS THE WORTH YOUR MONEY, AND YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED, IF YOU LIKE TO DANCE, AND IF YOU LOVE HIP HOP, WITH A LITTLE POP FLAVA TO IT, YOU'LL LOVE THIS ALBUM! MARIAH'S BANGIN', AND I WONT EVER STOP LOVIN HER, AND HER MUSIC!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Remix Compilation From Mariah!, October 14, 2003
This review is from: Remixes (Audio CD)
Although this collection contains 100% previously released material, it is also 100% excellence!

One particularly enjoyable listen is the excellent HEARTBREAKER/IF YOU SHOULD EVER BE LONELY Club Mix. It is very interesting and definitely a highlight, while the hot So So Def Remix of HONEY is worth the price of the disc alone, as is the most catchy remix ever remixed, the 12" Club Mix of EMOTIONS by C&C back in the day. Of course, the infamous club mix of DREAMLOVER is also included, and definitely pleases.

As bonus cuts we get LP versions of BREAKDOWN (1997, Butterfly), SWEETHEART (1998, #1's), and CRYBABY (1999, Rainbow) as well as the LOVERBOY REMIX (2001, Glitter SNDTRK.) and "FANTASY 'Bad Boy' REMIX" FEAT. ODB (1995, Fantasy Maxi-Single...1998, #1's), as well as the new track, "MISS YOU" FEAT. JADAKISS which was included on some import versions of her 2002 "Charmbracelet" album and I KNOW WHAT YOU WANT, a Top 5 hit collaboration with BUSTA RHYMES which was previously available on his 2002 album "It Ain't Safe No More".

This is definitely a CD full of 100% quality. Whether you are looking for something to sweat a storm to, feel nostalgic about, relax to or simply turn on for some full-fledged ear candy, THE REMIXES certainly satisfies. Not only is the quality 100%, but the price is outweighed by the quantity of tracks included!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but missing some classics, November 6, 2003
By
Mark of Oz (Sydney, NSW Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Remixes (Audio CD)
I absolutely love this cd, but there are some songs that should have made it on the cd that were excluded.

On the house mix cd, she forgot to put in:

'I still believe' remixes by David Morales. They are awesome.

Can't take that away (dance remixes) - that were on the single.

Loverboy (club mix) - which was heaps better than the original.

Against all odds - (pound boys mix)

And on the hip hop cd

'I still believe/pure imagination' - the best remix she has ever done. Its just wrong to exclude this.

'Underneath the stars' (drifting remix) - prett good remix

'Honey' (bad boy remix) - classic.

These songs would have made the cd flawless.

I EXPECTED THIS TO BE LIKE ANY OTHER REMIX ALBUM (JLO) BUT MARIAH WENT BACK TO THE STUDIO AND ALSO RESANG HER LYRICS. SHE IS A TRU ARTIST WHO WORKS HARD TO GIVE HER FANS A VARIETY OF MUSIC. SHE DIDN'T JUST PUT THE SONGS OVER A FASTER/REMIXED BEAT.YOU TRULY HEAR THE COMPLETE DIFFERENCE THATS WHY SHE'S THE #1 SELLING FEMALE ARTIST OF ALL TIME.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a remix album by THE QUEEN herself!!, October 6, 2004
By
This review is from: Remixes (Audio CD)
Finally! MC has a remix album! As MC herself as said, this should have been done YEARS ago, but that's Columbia for you! This is such a great collection of her GREAT remixes, on one CD, club remixes, the other, R&B/Rap remixes. I like the club mixes, great ones of her earlier hits, can't find the singles today, so must have CD. I love Disc Two, but I don't understand why Breakdown, Sweetheart, and Crybaby are on here. I love all 3, but none are a remix? Breakdown does have a remix, but this one isn't it. The CD contains the unreleased song, Miss You Featuring Jadakiss. This song is HOTT, should have been a single, and would have been Mariah's 16th #1!! The video would have been HOTT too. Why Columbia?? The One (So So Def Remix) Featuring Bone Crusher...WOW!! I love the original, but this one is so GREAT!! I don't know why JD isn't mentioned as a guest, he raps a lot? This should have been a single, this song is amazing, 17th #1...I swear, Columbia needs to fire everyone, re-open without Tommy Mottola...he did help Mariah, but he has hurt her by not releasing this singles...these are great songs.
OVERALL--A WONDERFUL collection of her best remixes, however, I Still Believe had some GREAT remixes, they should be on here. Another mistake by Columbia. If you get MC's singles, you have almost all of these songs, but Miss You and The One are worth the price. And if you are like me and love anything MC does, you already have this, this remix album is overdue...but worth the wait, a great album and a MUST HAVE for MC's lambs', or music lovers everywhere. GO BUY IT!!

5.0 out of 5 stars It is incredible, October 14, 2003
This review is from: Remixes (Audio CD)
I've never thought that Mariah would release an album in 2003 and I've never thought that it would be as good as the remixes finally is. You have her best club remixes on it like emotions, anytime you need a friend and the best remix ever "Heartbreaker/If you should ever be lonely" thats such a great remix, it has new lyrics, a brand new rhythm and a new meoldy and it's really fantastic. On the 2nd CD you have her greatest R&B remixes like my all/stay awhile or always be my Baby so so def remix with JD. There are so many very very great songs on it that u shouldn't miss. U can be against her singstyle on charmbracelet you may say the Greatest Hits album was boring, but you have to accept and love the remix album because these songs are classic and the best remixes ever, who rerecorded her songs for the remixes and Mariahs Remixes have always been and still are one of the best ever made!

So if i were you i would go in da city and buy this great album, it really brings memories back!

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Part Of Any Mariah Collection, October 28, 2003
This review is from: Remixes (Audio CD)
The most popular female artist of all time is back with a collection of old tunes, remixed and ready for your listening pleasure. While some remixes are new, some are old, but sound fresh enough for today's musical standards. The first disc offers more club type remixes. They are flashy, loud, exciting, very danceable, and long! The songs last from anywhere between 5 and 12 minutes long! The remixed versions are even better than the orginals in some ways, which were awesome to begin with! The second disc offers more of an R&B vibe. The remixes included here are not as exciting as on the first disc, but they are still very enjoyable to listen to. But one complaint: five of the thirteen songs on the 2nd disc are album cuts! Nonetheless, they fit in well with the other remixes. This CD sounds excellent. While it doesn't showcase Mariah's voice as much as a traditional studio album might, the beats keep the songs sounding fresh and interesting. And though they may be a bit long, the remixes don't get boring! Highly recommended for all Mariah fans, great for the casual fan, and excellent for the dance/club music fan! ENJOY!!!!!!!!!
