Only one problem...,

This review is from: The Remixes (Audio CD)
I am a huge, HUGE Shakira fan! To be honest, though, when I saw this CD for the first time I instantly thought, "Nope! Won't buy it!" I was convinced I wouldn't buy it because I am very clingy to original versions of songs. It's not too often I run across ANY remix of ANYONE'S song I like. After reading reviews online (mixed to about 50/50) I decided to give it a try. My opinion of this album is as follows: GOOD THINGS: 1) The techno remixes are not cheezy like I thought they would be. They have all the qualities of any good techno song plus the added bonus of Shakira's one-in-a-million voice. 2) The Portuguese remixes are sensational and every bit as loveable as the originals. 3) The jazzy version of "Un Poco de Amor" caught me off guard in the most pleasant of ways! It's got a real jazz soul to it and it just proves that Shakira's voice sounds great with any music! BAD THINGS: 1) There was not enough variety in the songs, there were only FOUR songs total in rotation on this album! 2) The songs got repetitive. 3) They should have remixed more songs. 4) I noticed that it was slim pickins as far as songs. 5) Get my point?????? I would suggest this album to anyone who's a true Shakira fan and who's not afraid to go out on a limb to expand their library of her music. Even if it's not heavenly to you, it's probable you'll like SOMETHING about it.

MIX MIX MIXED FEELINGS,
By boingo@spin.net.au (Australia) - See all my reviews

The EP features remixes of some of the best Shakira songs. No doubt, just about any of them will heat up a dance floor, but that's about it. It's great dance music, but will likely be found a bit boring if your intention is to listen, but not sway to the beat. Portuguese versions of her songs are also included, to cash in on the success she had in Brazil. Unfortunately, these have a noticeably diminished sound quality, evidence of quickly achieved tampering. As for her singing in portuguese, it sounds as bad as NYPD Blue dubbed to spanish for braodcasting, lifeless and unnatural! Still, a worthwhile, harmless addition to the Shakira collection, specially at EP pricing!

"The Remixes" plays it too safe,
This review is from: The Remixes (Audio CD)
If you're looking for an album that defines what Shakira's music is about, stay away from this release by her. You'd be better served by buying "Donde estan los ladrones?," "Pies Descalzos," or her "MTV Unplugged." "The Remixes" is predominantly formulaic dance electronica that doesn't showcase her voice, and her expressive voice (coupled with her talented song-writing) is what sets her apart from her contemporaries. This is an album that was designed primarily for club play, and her songs lose a lot of their emotional impact under an avalanche of synthesizers. The several Portuguese-language remixes are the only real standouts here and they save the album from being a total washout. Given the low cost of this CD, it's actually worthwhile to buy the album just for them alone.

-a nice remix of some good songs,

This cd is a nice mixture of some of Shakira's hits. This twines the songs into a cool mixture that makes dancing more "alive" The Portuguese is okay, and kind of fun to listen to. Although, I don't know Portuguese!

I love Shakira, but NOT REMIXED, there are few things WORSE to listen to then remixed music, they RUIN good songs like "Estoy Aqui", with techno dance beats, where good singers like Shakira, fall to the level of Paulina Rubio. I have heard them from Shania Twain and Thalia, and they are ALMOST as bad as this one. If you like Shakira (AT ALL), go get yourself "Grandes Exitos" so you can hear "Estoy Aqui" the way it should be heard (And YES, it is danceable in its ORIGINAL and infinatly BETTER form). I have the ENTIRE Shakira collection EXCEPT this one, and it will NEVER be in my collection, not even for free. In conclusion, this CD DESERVES ZERO stars for ruining good songs, but thank God, you can still get the entire collection WITHOUT buying this one (Unlike Thalia in English, which eventually I will have to get to so I can finish the collection).

More variety, less length, por favor,

It's true, she should've waited until after Donde Estan Los Ladrones to put this out, but it's actually pretty good. There certainly isn't enough material, and it repeats itself a lot, as far as the song list. Sure, each track may be a tad different when it comes to the re-mixed versions, but more variety and less length would've been a little better. I'm not usually a fan of re-mixes and find them boring much of the time, but I am a Shakira fan, so of course I had to add this to my collection. The best songs are the three Portuguese versions, which she made for her adoring Brazilian fans out there (those aren't re-mixes). It's interesting to sing along using the Spanish lyrics and to hear how similar/different the two languages are. This CD is full of energy, but unfortunately it's also a bit monotonous.

Shakira The remixes,

Shakira's voice and rythm rate her easily among the top latin american singers of the moment and in this CD she displays her wonderful voice and the very good content of her music. Anyone who appreciates music in spanish will love this cd! Pay close attention to her music in portuguese also.

Great Remixes - it could have had more songs,

This remix CD is great to dance to or even just to listen to. The only thing that isn't so great about it is that its just "Estoy Aqui," "Pies Descalzos, Suenos Blancos," "Un Poco de Amor," and "Donde Estas Corazon." Don't get me wrong, there great songs! I just think she should have waited a little longer before putting out a remix album. On the plus side:

This is a remix album worthy of her vocal talent. The CD should have had more than four songs in rotation, eight songs would be good. I am very please by the mixes. If you love club/dance music and love to dance, you will love this.

I will say that a few songs on this album are good, but overall this album doesn't do much justice for Shakira! If you enjoy club/dance remixes, then you may like these songs. I think the best song on this album is the Dance Remix of "Donde Estas Corazon" because it has an infectious beat to it that you simply cannot sit still during. If you don't own, or have at least heard Shakira's Pies Descalzos album, then you won't know the original songs. (These remixes are all songs from that album.) I recommend buying the Pies Descalzos album first...and then listening to these remixes after hearing the originals. |
