5.0 out of 5 stars 84 Kindergartners Entranced!, October 27, 2001
By
Karen Morse (Carlisle, MA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Remmy and the Brain Train: Traveling Through the Land of Good Sleep (Paperback)
I am a Kindergarten teacher and have just had the pleasure of sharing this wonderful book and CD with all four of our classes during "Kindergarten Get-Together". We had eighty-four 5&6-year-olds in one room and they sat transfixed with their eyes glued to the pages as we listened to Ms. Scheniman's wonderful song. I had previewed the book and was able to tell them before the reading that all of the sound effects are actual recordings of animals, trains, etc. They loved listening for each sound and singing-along with the chorus.

The lack of adequate sleep for children is a real issue in schools today and I am thrilled to have a book to recommend to parents as well as to their children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its sleepy time!, December 7, 2001
By
This review is from: Remmy and the Brain Train: Traveling Through the Land of Good Sleep (Paperback)
Kids today aren't getting enough sleep. It is obvious when you look at the number of children who are being labeled as having ADD or ADHD, when all they really need is more sleep. If you are a parent of a young child, I highly recommend this book, not just for your child(ren) but for parents too. Its important for parents and children to understand how sleep, or lack of sleep affects the body and more importantly, the mind. Remmy and Dr. Zeez help children to understand why they need to get their sleep and how they can benefit from getting 9 hours of GOOD sleep every night. I'm all ready reading this with my 6 week old daughter. The play along CD which accompanies the book is a great bonus which I find relaxes me as well as my daughter as it is played. Enjoy some good rest...you and your child(ren) deserve it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful book!, August 21, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Remmy and the Brain Train: Traveling Through the Land of Good Sleep (Paperback)
Dr. Maas's book, "Remmy and the Brain Train," is an absolute delight to read! The book chronicles a young boy, Remmy, through his important discovery of what sleep is and how it helps in his everyday life. Remmy benefits from the teaching of the wonderful sleep doctor, Dr. Zeez, who offers real-life wisdom about sleep that is applicable to all of us!

The characters are vibrant, the illustrations are very creative, and the story is incredibly engaging... education is rarely this fun! The author has crafted a book that is a true winner for children and parents alike, especially with the enclosure of the read-along, sing-along CD. I would highly recommend "Remmy and the Brain Train" as one of the best children's books available today.

Dr. Maas could not have written a more exciting, informative and meaningful book for children, emphasizing the importance of sleep through the experience of young Remmy, to whom children can easily relate. For children, Remmy and the Brain Train offers an exhilarating and personal journey that leads to the understanding that effective sleep results in a healthier and happier life. For parents, the book serves as an exceptional tool through which they can illustrate to their children why sleep should be viewed as a key ingredient in the formula for living life to the fullest!

5.0 out of 5 stars Vividly shows the benefits of a full night's sleep, September 17, 2001
This review is from: Remmy and the Brain Train: Traveling Through the Land of Good Sleep (Paperback)
Remmy And The Brain Train is a unique and very highly recommended picturebook about Remmy, a young boy who feels groggy, moody, and has trouble in school - until he goes on a magical train to the Land of Good Sleep, and learns how developing good sleep habits makes him smarter, stronger, happier, and healthier. The rhyming text by James B. Maas is surrounded by playful, colored-pencil style illustrations by Guy Danella that vividly show the benefits of a full night's sleep. Remmy and the Brain Train also comes with a bonus: a read-along, sing-along CD by award-winning children's songwriter & performer Suzanne Scheniman, with lots of whimsical sound effects. Remmy And The Brain Train is a perfect naptime or bedtime storybook.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's about time!, January 24, 2002

This review is from: Remmy and the Brain Train: Traveling Through the Land of Good Sleep (Paperback)
A recent nightly news program featured this wonderful book. Apparently, a young boy could not calm down during school. His parents took him in to his doctor, who quickly diagnosed him with ADD. Before going to meds, his parents wanted to explore other options. The boy's teacher suggested reading "Remmy and the Brain Train" to him every night before bed. Within ONE WEEK, his behavior toned down, and he was just fine during classes. Coincidence? Hardly. Sometimes getting a proper night's rest is all our kids need. ...). This book is worth it's weight in gold, especially considering you get a CD along with it. Great for all kids for help sleeping through the night and getting the proper amount of much needed rest.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic journey that educates while it entertains!, August 6, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Remmy and the Brain Train: Traveling Through the Land of Good Sleep (Paperback)
"Remmy and the Brain Train" is an exhilerating ride that will fascinate both parents and their young children, a rare accomplishment in children's literature. It's a clever, behind-the-scenes look at the values of sleep, that is just as educational for my husband and I, the parents of an inquisitive 5 year old, as it is for my son. Through the delightfully fun dialogue of Dr. James Maas's characters we are taken on a nightly journey to the land of great sleep and are cheerfully explained the benefits of bedtime...something ALL parents can appreciate! "Remmy and the Brain Train" is the perfect marriage of a working didactic tool and an imaginative, creative fairy tale. The principles behind better sleep are woven seamlessly into the story, and because awkward textbook jargon is thankfully nowhere to be found, our son actually understands why sleep is important! Just as I was intrigued and motivated by Dr. Maas's first book, Power Sleep, a few years ago, so now is my child by this, his first foray into children's literature. I would recommend "Remmy" heartily to all parents who want to raise a happy and healthy child!

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart and charming!, August 24, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Remmy and the Brain Train: Traveling Through the Land of Good Sleep (Paperback)
This is a delightful book! Dr. Maas weaves his expertise about good sleep habits into a story to which we can all relate, using rythm and rhyme that my five-year-old daughter loves. The illustrations are amusing and the sing-along CD is catchy, making this a book for her to enjoy on her own in between our "storytimes". Thank you for offering a fun, intelligent and applicable book!

Maas does a fine job in explaining to children why it's important to sleep. He writes in rhyme, and the colorful funny pictures add to the entertainment.

For adults, I give my strongest recommendation for Dr. William Dement's The Promise of Sleep. Stanford sleep researcher Dement covers everything from sleep pathology, dreams, and how sleep-load even affects your intelligence and internal organs. If you love a medical detective story, or just want help in physically feeling better, go check it out!
