5.0 out of 5 stars Built well and prepared to take a beating
As a musician I have owned various Remo products in the past and while these aren't professional quality by any means, they are a fun, sturdy starting point for someones little fingers. The built in legs keep them just high enough off of the surface to allow the drum head to resonate (except on our medium pile rug) and they are strong enough to handle a smashing (I often...

3.0 out of 5 stars Well constructed but only so-so sound
I like Remo drums. They make well-constructed drums at reasonable prices for all ages and uses. So I was hoping these inexpensive bongos would work well as spares for our drum circle, for adults or kids who don't bring their own percussion. But I've just received them today and found that when they are held between the knees, the sound is somewhat dull or deadened. I...

As a musician I have owned various Remo products in the past and while these aren't professional quality by any means, they are a fun, sturdy starting point for someones little fingers. The built in legs keep them just high enough off of the surface to allow the drum head to resonate (except on our medium pile rug) and they are strong enough to handle a smashing (I often find him beating on them with my drumsticks). The drum heads are not tunable, but they do sound quite nice right out of the box. The good thing about these is the sound actually gets better over time. As they loosen the tone gets nice and mellow. We used to keep a few of the earlier models of these Remo drums in the studio for recording because they had a surprisingly nice tone, nothing has changed there. Another bonus is I often find myself playing along to his favorite (Groove to the Music) music with them while he dances around the room.

The images on the drums themselves are of all different types of people and offer a form of entertainment in themselves. Often our son will become disinterested in actually drumming, but he'll sit there pointing at and asking questions about the various faces that are featured all over the drums.

For those of you about to click Buy I have a suggestion: out of the box the wing nuts should be checked for tightness. Ours came a little loose and the drums could twist a few degrees in each direction. My experience as a drummer also reminded me that after I tightened them down to put just a drop of Loctite THREADLOCK BLUE 6 ml. 24200 on each screw to keep the nuts from backing off over time.

All in all they were definitely a good buy. We both enjoy them immensely and I expect they'll be here for the long haul.

My son got these for his 4th birthday. He is now 6 and continues to enjoy them. They are really sturdy and are even fun for use by adults! Worth the money and the ear plugs!

These are great for kids. They don't need to be "tuned" (adjusted) so they are always ready for play. Got them for our twin 5 year olds last year. At 6, they're still playing with them regularly.

I got these for my 1.5 year old little girl. She can destroy an anvil, but these have held up well. I have caught her standing on them several times, beating them with a wooden mallet and they still held up. The sound is not fantastic, but could be worse. I have a friend that used to be a drummer and he could make them actually sound pretty good. Anyway, my little girl loves them. A good well-made product for a good price.

My niece loves these things.....and so do I. She bangs on them very early in the morning and drives her parents nuts. I have to get some louder toys for her.

I doubt that they will be loud enough in a drum circle to be satisfying (though for the price and Remo construction, they were worth a try).

I'd say if you have a young child who you want to encourage to play drums at home, these may still be a good choice because they will hold up well and are priced reasonably (and maybe because the sound isn't sharp enough to drive the rest of the family crazy). But if you want a half-way decent bongo sound these are probably not the best choice.

My 18-month old is so enchanted with these bongos I'll probably be buying more drums in the Remo line for kids. Good, distinctive tones, extremely sturdy, and colorfully designed. Though she plays them herself, very often she'll bring the bongos to an adult to play for her while she dances. We've had hours of fun together with this toy -- which is also why I consider the bongos an exceptional value. Quality family time!

5.0 out of 5 stars We like them, January 14, 2012

This review is from: Remo Rhythm Club Bongos
Our son is 8 months and just about starting to sit-up and explore things with his hands rather than his tongue. We noticed that he likes to constantly beat any surface in front of him and that is where the idea to buy him drums came from. Our son played these drums for the first 10 minutes, then licked them, then kicked them and was done with them. But that's not the point. These drums sound quite well and seem to be baby-proof. More importantly, they can be taken apart very easily and be used as two separate drums... this is how our son uses them now as he is too little to be able to beat both of them together. I'm completely satisfied with the product quality and price and would seek Remo Rhythm musical toys next time too.
