1.0 out of 5 stars No Remorse is a matter of taste April 16, 2012
By Kiersi
Format:Kindle Edition
Amber is a werewolf with very peculiar powers. She's spent her life on the run, working odd jobs and living out of motels, all to evade the werewolf pack that murdered her mother's family. But when her teenage crush, Blake, ends up in mortal danger, Amber swings into action--and so does their firestorm romance.

With her old pack and the Council of werewolves at her heels, Amber must fight to protect her new pack, and to survive.

Like vampires, werewolves have seen more than their fair share of literary action in the last decade--Twilight, the Sookie Stackhouse novels, Harry Potter--you get the picture. That said, No Remorse is exactly what you would expect in the era of True Blood and Underworld: a novel about werewolves living among us in packs, who change at the full moon, and who terrorize their human prey.

I do think there is a place for a novel like No Remorse in today's literary world. Werewolves are well-loved, and there is undoubtedly still a market for them. Unfortunately, the craft of No Remorse fails to live up to expectations.

Like many independent publications (No Remorse is published by Bast's independent publishing house, Werewolf Tails Publishing), I think the problem boils down to a lack of professional editing--it shows in the story development, frequent typos, and basic punctuation mistakes. Early in the novel, Bast struggles with the stretching and collapsing of time. She gives the early years of Amber's life the summary treatment, missing a great opportunity to build the reader's empathy. Similarly, Amber's love interest, Blake, is introduced in a single sentence: "Since arriving at the school a couple weeks after she had, Blake had been a true friend and she trusted him." We are never told how Blake became a true friend, or more importantly, why a girl running for her life would come to trust him.

There is also some confusion in No Remorse over which character is telling the story. At first, our third-person narrator only gives us insight into Amber's thoughts and feelings; but as the novel goes on, perspective suddenly shifts to Blake, and even other minor characters. I wasn't sure which character deserved my sympathies, and it left me unable to trust Bast's narration. Of course, I've seen this phenomenon occur even in big-time publications with professional editors, so perhaps it is a matter of taste.

Bast does excel at pacing her action sequences and rolling out realistic, catchy dialogue, which helps carry the middle of the novel. As a writer, this is probably her strongest area; sequences with low tension seem to be harder. The sex scenes in No Remorse are long and gratuitous. I realize that erotica is often a key component in paranormal novels aimed at an adult audience, but as a reader I found myself skimming to get back to the story.

As for the rest of the novel? There were so many sudden revelations and twists in the back-story that I lost track of what was true and what wasn't. I love a good surprise--don't get me wrong--but at some point, I wasn't able to suspend my disbelief any longer. Perhaps werewolves have simply outlived their time.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Read! April 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I absolutely adore paranormal romance, especially shifters. So, when the author asked me to be a part of her blog tour, there was no hesitation on my end! When I sat down to read this, it was with the anticipation that this book would be absolutely awesome. It sounded really, really great, however, I was a little disappointed. Not to the point that I didn't thoroughly enjoy the book, but it was, in the beginning, not what I was expecting.

The beginning of the story jumps right into Amber viciously killing her prey: a man on a camping trip alone. I don't like that. However, as Amber's story progresses, things fall into place, knowing how her family was killed, and what she endured as child, I could really see where she needed to do the things she did. As she runs from the danger, doing anything she can to survive, the intensity of the story picks up.

When she runs into Blake, a boy she adored when she was younger, and realizes that she needs to help save him as he did her, the romance sparks, and Amber will do anything to protect him, and the pack she now belongs to. Her wolf abilities aren't like others and she knows what she needs to do to protect those she cares about, and has no remorse in what she does.

With twists and turns that keep the reader on the edge of their seat, you can definitely fall in love with Amber and Blake. With secondary characters that complete the heart of the story, this wild ride is just the start to what is sure to be a fantastic new series. Despite the beginning when I didn't enjoy it as much, I still recommend this book with 4 Books! I can't wait to see what Ms. Bast has in store for her new fans next :).

4.0 out of 5 stars No Remorse April 16, 2012
By Ms_TJ38
Format:Kindle Edition
Amber is left on her own after her mother is taken away and returned to the council. She hasn't shifted yet and really knows nothing about being a werewolf even though she is a born wolf.

She is sent to an orphange for wolves who have no homes or are not wanted. She makes friend with Blake and soon turmoil with other wolves forces her out of the home and Blake helps her escape.

While out running her wolf watches and a car goes off the road and Amber goes to investigate. She knows she should not get involved but she is drawn to the smell of blood. Her choice to check out the car sets off a chain reaction that will change her life.

It took me a few pages to get into the book. The opening I thought was a little long and I got bored and wanted the story to move along. Once we got past the first 30 or so pages the book picks up.

This is not a YA book, there are a few sex scenes. The first I enjoyed but the next few a actually ended up skimming through. I like sex in my books, even strong sexual tension will do if it's done right. But doing it right also applies to stories having several sex scenes. You need variety in order to keep the readers attention and keep it steamy. I felt like they did the same thing but in a different location and added a move or two.

I did however like the spin that were put on Amber's abilities. I like that she was strong and even though she didn't understand how to be a werewolf she had no fear and would not be bullied.

There is mention of vampires (and a small appearance of one) and other shifters but they didn't get any time in this book.

I liked it a bit more than OK in most spot, so I'll give it a 3.5 Stars. It's closer to a 4 than a 3.
