Book Description

A brand new Spider Shepherd short story, including an exclusive extract from the eleventh Spider Shepherd all action thriller, WHITE LIES, out 14 August 2014.

When Dan 'Spider' Shepherd is called urgently to a remote UK RAF base, he has no idea of the hazardous task set out before him.

Working closely with a team of drone pilots, Shepherd's brief is to help take down Abdaullah Hussain: a British-born Somalian terrorist who has fled Britain to a safe house in Pakistan. Branded 'the new Bin Laden' - and the world's most dangerous and wanted extremist - Hussain is a threat who must be eliminated at all costs.

As one of the only people who have ever seen Hussain face to face, Shepherd must identify him for the drone operators before he slips through the net again - and the next planned terror attack goes ahead. But as the drones close in the operation takes a nasty turn, and Shepherd is left to decide how far he will go - and what he will risk - to hit his target . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars Consequences July 17, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Stephen Leather gifts us a free Spider Shepherd story to warm us up for the imminent release of White Lies.

Any this one deals with the topical and controversial subject of drones and their use to remotely take out terrorists and targets of importance. In this one Spider is asked to, from the comfort of a UK airbase, act as a spotter for a potential drone strike. But Spider is going to have to make an important decision about the greater good. And there may be consequences from his decision that, I suspect, will bleed into White Lies.

Less of an action focus on this one, but an interesting view on the use of remote technology and the emotion and consequence of its use. Really thoughtful and interesting perspective to frame around Spider and his own mind-set.

Not sure how this can be anything less than five stars – it is free, it is about Spider, it sets up White Lies and it is an intelligent and thoughtful story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great quick read July 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
The ability to insert technical details and information into the narrative of a story without detracting from the action or plot is a difficult task at which Stephen Leather excels. In a tightly written short story Leather manages to inform, entertain and pose a moral dilemma. A great quick read with the added bonus of an old character making a surprise return.
