new ways of seeing and doing,
By Joong Won Lee "Joongwon" (Cambridge, MA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Remy Zaugg/Herzog & De Meuron (Paperback)
Whenever I read H&Dm's text, my heart beats before my brain boils.
Because their fresh way of seeing and testing challenges where I stand and how I go about. I felt extremely good reading this book. It made me scribble so much side notes. Dialogue with Remy flows so easily, but the issues they box around challenge both disciplines' (art and architecture) ways of seeing and doing. Typical relationship of artist and architect would be would be grounded on an art piece installation coordination. In such case, architecture is only a back drop to a given piece. H&Dm's collaboration with artists denies this approach, they are more Socratic, they start from empty table, discuss the way thru, arrives at a dialectical point, that is forever new and fresh to both parties. Hidden dimensions and methods are revealed both in concept and experiment. If you are on the left side of H&Dm and die to criticize them by ridiculing, "Oh,,,, H&Dm is collaborating with artist only because they want to advertise their work to the larger audience. Oh,,,, their works are only simplified replicas of by-gone masters such as Beuys/ Judd/ Richter. Oh,,,, they talk art because they want to pervade sense of originality. Oh,,, their work is only inking windows, crooking box, wearing different clothes..." Shut up ! Just Read the Book ! You will know what H&Dm built over the years is far bigger than your cheap and trashy criticism. It's not a singular bowl that they created, they built a furnace. A highly original firing-hot thinking enterprise.
