This book brings together works of art from the permanent collection at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, including Giorgione's "Adoration of the Shepherds", Raphael's "Alba Madonna" and "The Rest on the Flight into Egypt" by Gerard David. Also included are lesser known works such as Bernaert van Orley's "Marriage of the Virgin", "The Tender Madonna of the Stars" by Tintoretto and the Mantegna composition, "The Christ Child Blessing". These Northern Renaissance paintings are joined with the Christmas story from the King James Bible and excerpts from poetry and music texts of the period to create a vision of a Renaissance Christmas.
