While assigned to a beat in China Town, Jackson and Officer Pete Petersen are both shot. Officer Petersen dies from his wounds. Investigators identify the suspects as a group of renegade law enforcement officers. While assigned to the mayor’s security detail, Jackson is again injured in what the press describes as an attempt to assassinate the mayor. The officer kills the assailants. A newly elected reform mayor selects Jackson and his colleagues to root out the corruption that has existed in their hometown for more than a century. When the investigation is complete, a grand jury indicts the former mayor, the chief of police and the district attorney. However, three police officers die violent deaths before the case comes to trial.

I found this to be a very enjoyable read, especially being a Seattleite. The story follows the life of a young policeman as he builds his career and family while teaming with members of his department to overturn the corruption that spans the police department and local government. Moloney compels you to read on as the vast corruption slowly unfolds, providing an interesting historical perspective about the Seattle police department along the way.

A novel yes, but in a real setting. The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
Although set in Seattle the mystery is the thing. A gripping tale of political conspiracy and murder. Keep in mind that the novel is set in a city that was actually the most corrupt for 100 years before being cleaned up. The corruption was real. Seattle was so corrupt you just know our hero has learned enough that some powerful figure wants him dead. If you like Joseph Wambaugh you will love Neil Moloney.

A good, engrossing read. An interesting story about what can happen when corrupt politicians and a few bad apples can influence the careers of well-meaning and hard-working cops.
