Book Description

November 6, 1973
This is the first paperback edition of this book, which was first published in 1969. The author traces the rise of a new attitude to classical antiquity, an attitude which became noticeable in the late 13th century but which came fully of age in the first half of the 15th century with humanists such as Poggio and Flavio Biodon. The book covers the period 1300 to 1527.

4.0 out of 5 stars For Scholars Only, November 8, 2009

This is a book for professional historians, especially Renaissance scholars, and not for a general audience. Whole passages in Latin, Italian, and Greek are left untranslated for the reader, and unless you have some knowledge of Italian humanist culture, the references may be baffling. Nonetheless, scholars will find this an enjoyable and incredibly erudite little study. Weiss focuses on the Renaissance fascination with the physical remains of the ancient world (marbles, ruins, coins, inscriptions, etc.) and traces its course from the earliest humanists to the late Renaissance. Despite the esoteric topic, Weiss' writing is informal, and sometimes even humorous, and demonstrates a real passion for Italy and its ancient remains.
