Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This gorgeously illustrated work elaborates on Fernand Braudel's thesis in Civilization & Capitalism (above) that the great commercial cities were at the center of the development of modern European life. Holmes argues that it was cities such as Florence and Antwerp that provided the environment necessary for the expression of the new attitudes to humanity by painters, sculptors, and writers, new attitudes "which then entered into the general European consciousness." Review

[Holmes] is especially good at conveying what is mysterious and cannot be explained in many Renaissance paintings and sculptures, and he makes somehow coherent, if not fully definable, the greatness of painters like Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael. -- The New York Times Book Review, David Walton

4.0 out of 5 stars A Beautifully Illustrated History of the Renaissance, January 22, 1999

This review is from: Renaissance (Hardcover)
I have very little knowledge of the Renaissance and the only reason I picked this book up in the first place was for the beautiful illustrations contained inside. I found the book easy to read and the author provided me with an understanding of this period in history and backed this up with a fine selection of paintings and other items from the masters of this period.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants an easy to understand account of the Renaissance and how it affected peoples lives. The author takes his time to explain the period in laymans terms, it was well presented and well researched. It's worth it just for the illustrations alone!
