5.0 out of 5 stars The smartest thing MxPx has done
MxPx turned a lot of heads when they announced they were putting an EP out on FAT. Personally, I think this is the smartest thing this band has ever done. While the physical quality of this record is "fair", the quality of the songs make up for it. This record in no way resembles any of the band's latest releases, containing songs that are a little "ballsy" for a pop-punk...

2.0 out of 5 stars i'm letdown
I am a big fan of Mxpx, i have every cd. I didn't like this one.

i bought "take off your pants..." and the renaissance ep at the same time, and forgive me for comparing the two, but i like the blink album much more. MxPx has been in the music game a long time, and have the capability to pull lots of tricks out of the bag; i recognized lots of those elements...

5.0 out of 5 stars The smartest thing MxPx has done, May 30, 2001

MxPx turned a lot of heads when they announced they were putting an EP out on FAT. Personally, I think this is the smartest thing this band has ever done. While the physical quality of this record is "fair", the quality of the songs make up for it. This record in no way resembles any of the band's latest releases, containing songs that are a little "ballsy" for a pop-punk (if that's what you want to call it) band to be playing. "Talk of the Town" is the perfect example of that. It is a fast-paced, aggressive hardcore song that makes you double check to make sure you are actually listening to MxPx. The last track, "Yuri Wakes Up Screaming" is another track that you would never see on any of their major label releases. The same line is repeated throughout the whole song (with a slight exception) and the melodies change and breakdowns occur. It's definitely odd. The record opens with "Lonesome Town." This song is melody packed but doesn't stand a chance to its succeeder, "Letting Go." The future of this band is constantly being questioned but taking a break from releasing [junk]-filled records was definitely a good idea. And while the recording quality is always being knocked, the band made the choice of doing it themselves, and releasing it on a somewhat indie label. If MxPx sent this DIY message from the start I think they would be respected far more than they are respected today. A record like this was definitely due from this band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great EP, April 21, 2003
This review is from: The Renaissance (Audio CD)
This is an amazing EP. This, along with "the decline" by nofx, is probably the best EP I own. And remember do not expect a half an hour album this is an 18 minute classic EP. When I first got this CD it stayed in my CD player for weeks. I couldn't stop listening to it. You have to buy this CD and where is lacks in quantity it makes up in quality.

MxPx is back with this new EP, they rip through the nine tracks in just over 18 minutes. The most important thing about this record is that it is not on major label A&M and it is produced by MxPx themselves. Gone is the super-clean, generic sound of "The Ever Passing Moment", the freedom that Fat Wreck allowed them to recapture the feel and sound of "Pokinatcha" mixed with a little "Buffalo". This EP is worth getting but at 12 bucks its a little pricey.

4.0 out of 5 stars short, but not disappointing, June 15, 2001

This review is from: The Renaissance (Audio CD)
"The lonesome town is crowded, i'm always first in line...with fresh new starts for broken hearts and wasting all my time..." Renaissance is much shorter than the usual mxpx albums but songs like Lonesome Town make the 18 minutes (9 tracks) worth it. I'll listen to that one, Party II (Time To Go), and The Opposite over and over again. Nothing compares to the EPM, but Renaissance is full of fast, catchy songs that are especially great for the car. Don't get your hopes up, but check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great EP, May 31, 2001

MxPx has matured so much sense their beginning albums. This album showcases what kind of artists they want to be. Sure it is only 18 minutes long, but if you really take the time to listen to it, you will find that these guys have great lyrics and can actually play their instruments. What surprised me the most was the fact that they recorded the whole album at Mike Herrera's (lead singer and bassist) house, and that they wrote every song and did everything from producing and mixing. That's what I love about MxPx. They do everything themselves so you are listening to their music, not someone else's music. Some first-time-listeners might listen and think their music is unusual, but for the people who have been fans sense MxPx's early days, you'll fall in love automatically. I recommend this album to anyone who enjoys punk-rock/Christian music. Defiantly on my top 3 list.

This is a great album with some catchy songs and great lyrics. Mxpx are a great band, and one of the best live bands I've seen, their really nice guys and really down to earth. I think it's stupid that people slag them because they belive in God, I mean does it really matter?? Anyway it's a great album, one of my favorite MxPx albums(althougth I like all their albums)GREAT RECORD!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars MxPx- Another great EP!, May 29, 2002
This review is from: The Renaissance (Audio CD)
First off- DON'T EXPECT AN ALBUM!!! It's an EP, and those are always short, but they can still be great, like this one :).
K'Dokey, now on to the review. This is the 3rd MxPx disk I got (EPM, LIH) and I like this one just as much as the others. Especially track 6 "Don't Look Back"--- wow, that one kicks some serious boo-tay! Reminds me of some of the stuff that I've heard off of SGtWotB... Anyways, nice, fast, punk. Whether it be pop-punk (1, 3, 9), power-punk (2, 5, 8), emo (6), or hardcore (4, 7)--- its all good punk and true punk---they HAVEN'T SOLD OUT! Can't wait for their next album...

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely a Rennaisance for MxPx!, June 10, 2001
This review is from: The Renaissance (Audio CD)
After Ever Passing Moment, I had my doubts that MxPx would put out another good album. They are still one of my favorite bands and all, but Ever Passing Moment was very bad and I was worried about the rest of their cd's experiencing the same fate. Guess it didn't happen, because The Rennaisance EP is one of the best MxPx albums ever! Sure it's only 9 songs totaling 18 minutes, but it's some of the best 18 minutes you'll ever spend listening to a cd. Only maybe 2 or 3 songs on the disc sound remotely like EPM, but for some reason, they just sound better and totally rule. So stop reading this review and go buy The Rennaisance EP. Tracks to check out: Lonesome Town, Party II, The Opposite, Talk of the Town, and Yuri Wakes Up Screaming.
