5.0 out of 5 stars exuberant, inventive artistry, October 24, 2010

What a joy this album is! I only regret that I only now (2010)discovered Scott's work: to me, the acme of jazz piano artistry that I've heard on the contemporary scene. Scott clearly makes no compromises, pushing his creative passions in always surprising directions. Inevitably, perhaps, such cutting-edge, novel interpretations haven't received sufficient appreciation among conventional jazz listeners. The exciting opening cut--a "Poinciana" which couldn't be more different than Ahmad Jamal's classic rendition--bursts like an exuberant rocket, driving ever-forward into pure exhilaration. He tackles other standards like "Tenderly" and "Just Friends," always with imaginative panache, unusual tempos, and undiluted joie de vivre.

Saw Stephen Scott with Sonny Rollins and since Sonny has gone of into Calypso land and Bob Cranshaw just ran the numbers on electric (say's Sonny can't hear acoustic) was always most impressed with Scott. Here he plays well and chooses standards that are great. But you know that thing where it just won't hold you for one sitting and you split listening up.It's strange for me to say why because technically Scott is fine and plays with great flourish. His "Black,Brown, and Beige" type of three(MP3) or four part piece is not exactly up to his technique.Since it's cheap what's the risk. It's still a solid CD from a talented player.

Cheers

Chazz
