Buy this!, July 28, 2006

This was an impulse buy for me, mainly because I love Renata Scotto and the item is cheap. I expected bad sound quality, but I was pleasantly surprised! It's not as bad as I expected and completely listenable. All these recordings date from before 1970, so you can be sure that Scotto is in fine form. Scotto is a true vocal actress. Her dramatic instincts in these live performances is spectacular as is her astonishing technique. She floats wonderful pianissimi and spins endless legato phrases in such a heavenly way. Especially gripping is the "Libera Me". She fully realizes the dramatic possibilities of it, unlike many sopranoes who simply sing it beautifully. The I Lombardi is also available in a complete set, which I highly recommend. Buy that and buy this one too, you can't go wrong!
