The Spirit of Lenny, July 24, 2003

Many great drummers are doing their own albums these days instead of backing up some great front man; (meaning piano, saxaphone, guitar, etc.) however, unlike some great drummers for these front men, they lack their own identity and ability to come up with the hook of a great melody when going solo(of course not only drummers have this problem, but bassists and others also), yet Lenny White is the master at producing an album that not only shows off great drumming, but great songs, and isn't this the purpose of listening to any music? Lenny is as good as any of the rest--period! This album, like "Present Tense", and "Edge", are some of the best music around today. Lenny has the ability to do just the right thing at the right time, and as a drummer myself for over thirty years, I appreciate a percussionist who can stand up with the Metheny's and the Sanborn's and make great music. And aren't you glad there are those like Lenny who are not caving into the money and playing the "wave" repetition albums over and over. Keep up the great work Lenny.
