This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A180704. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The High Level Architecture (HLA) is the Department of Defense standard for networking virtual environments. This thesis implements a modular HLA component that can be used independently from the graphics-rendering engine used by the programmer. The modular design of the HLA component allows programmers of virtual environments to rapidly network their existing standalone virtual environments using the DOD standard networking protocol. The HLA component is being used to build a networked virtual environment compatible with Joint Semi-Automated Forces (JSAF). This networked virtual environment will allow a group of human controlled simulations to interact with JSAF controlled entities over common terrain.
