No other book is necessary,

This review is from: Rendering in Pen and Ink: The Classic Book On Pen and Ink Techniques for Artists, Illustrators, Architects, and Designers (Practical Art Books) (Paperback)
If you have a desire to learn to draw with pen and ink this is the first book you should buy. It is thorough and informative. It goes into great detail about different techniques used to obtain certain effects (or textures). I refer to this book time and time again, and although my main media is not pen and ink, I cannot help but to be inspired by his lessons. This is a fun medium and an inexpensive one. If you are truly interested in learning the ins and outs of pen and ink drawing and can only afford one book, this is the book.

Years ago, when spare time was still a reality for me, I used to draw birds and other animals in ink. I still love ink, maybe because I love the minutest details that it can express so well. The main reason why I purchased this book was not the text, and the pedagocical content, but the many splendid splendid illustrations from masters of the art. Still, I ended up also reading this book, even if I spent much more time admiring the illustrations. It is beautifully written, you immediately realize why this book has become an eternal "classic". But the illustrations, the illustrations are literally awesome. Every time I have this book in my hands I feel that I want to start drawing again. There are example of every sort, and they are all equally splendid: landscapes, portraits, architectural drawings, images of fables and monuments. Believe me, if you like ink, you will have a hard time finding a better book that this. If you would like to start drawing in ink, or if you would like to improve your technique, you will like this book even more, but the illustrations are worth the price by themselves. No wonder that all reviewers appear to agree! This book is fantastic.

This review is from: Rendering in Pen and Ink: The Classic Book On Pen and Ink Techniques for Artists, Illustrators, Architects, and Designers (Practical Art Books) (Paperback)
This book is: 1) To the point and clear to understand. 2) Detailed with explainations for all techniques. 3) Filled with illustrations and examples cover-to-cover. I consider this to be my 'bible' for Pen & Ink. I was able to learn so much in such a short amount of time. It made my experience, excelling in this media, fun and enjoyable to go through! This is a MUST to have in your collection!

THE bible for anyone interested in pen and ink drawing,

This review is from: Rendering in Pen and Ink: The Classic Book On Pen and Ink Techniques for Artists, Illustrators, Architects, and Designers (Practical Art Books) (Paperback)
I bought this book in hard cover in New Zealand in 1972 while on holiday. It was recommended to me as the very best reference book for any one interested in learning to draw in pen and ink and I have to agree with that opinion. It is full of informative 'how to's and has some terrific examples of the art including some by the brilliant author. It, and its companion volume, "Rendering in Pencil" by the same author A Guptill are the most prized possesions in my art book library. I don't lend these to anyone. I would recommend any budding artist or illustrator to aquire both of these reference books though the pencil book does not appear in Amazon's listing and may be hard to find.

Choose wisely.,

I bought Rendering in Pen and Ink, and the Technical Pen based on the reviews hoping that one of them would be good enough, and I got lucky. They are both quite good. They both seemed to be the best books on pen, and ink techniques based on the reviews. Being 60+ years old this book is a little dated comparatively. This book is geared towards a metal nib tipped pen, or calligraphy, quill style pen - if you prefer, and the technical pen is primarily a Rapidograph Pen technique book. (technical Pens) The thing is Rendering in Pen and Ink is 60+ years old, twice as thick, and in the end is about 1/2 as good as the technical pen in my opinion. It has a fair amount of ink techniques, examples, and a lot of chatter, but not much in the way of "how to" if that's what your interested in. There are some examples of hatching patterns, and plenty of them, but for the most part I'm sure you can get it in every other book. Although if you are using a calligraphy pen only. This may be the book for you even though it doesn't teach any calligraphy. On the other hand in the book The Technical Pen the illustrations and inks are up to date, there is great deal of precision detailing, and they look almost nouveau compared to the examples in Rendering in Pen and Ink. The galleries are integrated into the the technical pen, and almost used as examples of techniques that are being described, and It really draws you in. (no pun intended) It's quite inspiring when you find a good book, and as good as these old books are; some newer books can take it to a whole new level.

First and Last Pen & Ink Book Needed,
By Shey Strickland (SC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rendering in Pen and Ink: The Classic Book On Pen and Ink Techniques for Artists, Illustrators, Architects, and Designers (Practical Art Books) (Paperback)
This book was the very first art book I ever purchased for myself while in high school (sometime between 1976-79. I remember having to save money babysitting to get it. It's pages were magic to me. I studied it, used it to learn ink techniques all through high school and college. Sometime in the last 20 years of frequent moves and raising chidren the book was lost. Now, I am looking to purchase another one to use for teaching my own art students techniques in ink rendering. It's the only one needed and has carried me through a long art career and love in the art of using pen and ink.

My #1 Pen & Ink Book,

Edited to eliminate substances we just don't use any more, this classic is still a complete course in how to use pen and ink. Covers basic strokes, draftsmanship, layers of value, uses of light and shade in composition, rendering texture, and a host of more advanced topics. Pen and ink was always one of my favorite media, and this has become my favorite book on the subject.

This is the best ink rendering text you can find. Get it first, and it's the only one you will need. Get it anytime, and you will never stop learning from it. Guptill mastered rendering and teaches it easily.

This book, published in 1930, was once out of print for a span, but has become a mainstay of illustration books since reprinted in the 1970's. While the average modern illustrator/comic artist would pick it up and think, 'Ew. Old Stuff', it provides all the necessities on how to arrange, light, crop, render and delineate objects. When I picked it up in art school I used it a bit, read it a bit and then forgot it because I went into an art form that didn't use illustrative technique as specifically shown in this book. Now, getting back into ink drawing, I have rediscovered this book and realize it is probably the best illustration book on the market. Purely brilliant in an age where most books on art are very sloppy, watered dowqn or mis-informed.

A masterpiece. The best thing I can say about this book, is that it is always beside my drawing table. Every ink artist or would-be ink artist will treasure it.
