Most language books require a code that provides tutorials and an online workbook plus practice. This technology is expensive and so is the code alone. If you buy a new book, you'll likely SAVE money since the code is already included. Buying direct from the publisher is the least expensive.

Had to buy the whole package from the publisher directly for my 101 class. Had I not had a taste of 101 in another semester before having to drop, I would have been lost like most of my fellow classmates. This book is highly unorganized and often had words shoved in that are taught on the pages following or in following chapters. We are often asking the professor who states, and I quote, "yes, they tend to do that in this book...it's unfortunate but at least we have our dictionaries to supplement their errors".

I'd just say it's bad editing and writing. Who on earth are these publishers, and what are they drinking??

In addition to that, the information is far from sufficient...and not at all well put together.

I purchased a used copy of Espaces for my beginning french course as it was way cheaper than buying it new. One major problem - it didn't come with the code for online access to the supersite, which was required for the course by my prof. I ended up having to go to the publishers website to buy the code online for $119 and it ended up COSTING MORE ($24!!!) than if I had just bought it as a brand new package from their site.

BOTTOM LINE: If you need to access the Supersite, save yourself some money and DO NOT BUY A USED COPY OF THIS BOOK!

Warning, mes amis ! This book DID NOT contain the code I needed to do the homework. I had to buy one, and paid more than everyone who bought the new book and code at the store. I was supposed to be saving money here !!! NOT !

Love this book! I bought it for my French class, and this was the best deal I could find, this book is pretty expensive when bought new. The book was in outstanding condition, even though it was noted that it is used. It didn't look used at all! Great condition, I'm enjoying learning French with it :)

I didn't expect this to have an online code for the Supersite, the WebSam and the VText, but it did! I only purchased it for review for the fall semester French 3 class since I haven't taken French in years. Not only did it have the code, but it was an almost brand new hardcover book for only $11 (with the code, this would've cost $200 or more on the site). The Supersite is the central site for the course, while the WebSam is for the lab and workbooks. The VText is the entire textbook online.

My purchase experience is probably not the norm, however. I don't think there's any way of knowing if you're going to get a good book with an unused code unless you ask the seller directly if the code on the first page has NOT been scratched off. Also, the picture for this item shows the looseleaf version, but the title says it is hardcover, and that's what I got although I would've preferred the looseleaf version. But as it is, I'm very happy with what I got.

I've just redeemed the code on the website and about to start the lessons. I'll later add further to this review for my actual experience with it. So far, the book and website have tons of material-- videos, audio, references, lessons, etc. The book seems to cover a well-rounded program of language learning:

1. Espaces Contextes - practice vocabulary in a variety of formats; presents the rules of French pronunciation and spelling
2. Espace Roman-photo - tells the story of a group of students living in Aix-en-Provence, France, in videos
3. Espace Culture - explores cultural themes introduced in Espace Contexteds and Espace Roman-photo
4. Espace Synthese - pulls the lesson together with cumulative practice in Revision
5.

This textbook is awful. Pictures & examples are confusing, I didn't learn anything from just reading it, and the book smelled weird when I got it. Poorly written. I wish our French program didn't switch to this book.

The supersite is very nice and necessary. The text book has become nearly obsolete (only use it in class when doing projects as a group so I rarely pull it out of my pack). You really don't need it if you are doing homework or studying on your own. No need to get the ebook or workbook (in my opinion) because the website has most of the examples and excersises that are necessary.
