It is virtually impossible to charge a music review these days without some comparative allusion. The now-deep history of pop music and popular culture demands reference points. So I suppose I need to catalog where your ears should go to assimilate-by-association the comparisons equal to The Bedsit Poets.
Are you familiar with the Donovan box set where a mystical flower gifted the clueless garden? Have you ever experienced the effervescence of Colin Blunstone as he breathes new life experiences into Tim Hardin's "Misty Roses"? Are your days often sound tracked by Ray Davies' eulogizing HIS daze with..."Days"? Did Marianne Faithfull's innocent appearance on Shindig ruin your life in terms of ever REALLY meeting (or being) the perfect teen girl-child?
I could go on...and on...but why bother since your time would be better spent mesmerized and memorizing crystalline songs such as "She's a Mystery" and "NoTel RendezVous." Here, and virtually everywhere the voices and verses by Bedsit Poets Amanda Thorpe, Edward Rogers and Mac Randall preciously glissando through a range of emotions from blissful pain to pleasantly insane for an overall music journey of accomplishment nearly untouched by anything else out there these days. Excuse me for a few minutes as I need to visit "Winson Green" and grab a weep or two listening to "Je Vie Ma Vie Dans Ma Facon."
In the now treasured decade of the sixties life-altering pop music of this caliber was the norm rather than the exception in both rock and folk music. Actual poetry damn neared suffered because of the sublime glut of songs (and voices) willing to take listeners on journeys near-dreamscape in proportion to their relatively earthbound lives. Those instances are few and far between these days so stumbling on the Bedsits (yes, you instantly want to persona-code their name, consider them confidants and hum their songs right back at them!) is a rare, precious and beautiful gift.
Rendezvous with the Bedsit Poets. Seriously, do it ASAP. It could be one of the most important meetings of your listening life.
