This volume surveys the history of Modern art, from the turn of the century to approximately 1970. I recently picked this up at the Guggenheim, and it's one of my favorite books I have on 20th-century art.

Pros:
Encompasses some of the more obscure pieces from the artists
Cheap, cheap price ($10 at the Guggenheim for the paperback)
Not text-heavy, but the intro text is definitely worth reading
Minimalist layout

Cons:
Very heavy, but is still suitable for a coffee table or an entertainment center
For such a heavy book, the cover could be a little thicker
I have never seen the hardcover version of this, and I am most certain paperback is the only option
