4.0 out of 5 stars Relaxing music for recorder trio and male alto., May 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Rene Clemencic Edition, Vol. 2: Johannes Kugelmann (Audio CD)
Kugelmann lived from 1495-1542 and is one of the first generation of Lutheran composers that eventually led to Praetorius, Schutz, Scheidt and Schein.

You would think that this Arte Nova release would be a reissue at this price, but in fact it was recorded 1995. Apparently "live" though the recording lacks audience coughing. The CD is well thought out, mixing vocal and instrumental pieces, and well filled at 52'25. Texts are given in German or Latin as appropriate, with notes in English, French and German. Bernhard Landauer gives a nicely reflective and unfussy vocal line. The mellow recorder sound makes this an unusually attractive disc of early Lutheran music for those who find drums, sagbutts and shawns a bit too jarring and aggressive.
