Editorial Reviews

Reneé Fleming and one of her favorite singing partners, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, explore the origins of 19th-century European opera performance in the courtly theatres of St. Petersburg, presenting a three-part program of Verdi duets, songs by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and Medtner, and Tchaikovsky opera, performed, by special permission, in the opulent theatres of the legendary Winter Palace, the Palace of the Yusopov family and the magnificent Peterhof. The 90 minute film is fronted by Reneé Fleming herself, as she takes the viewer on a journey through the musical locations and history of "The Venice of the North". The DVD will also include 23 minutes of extra performance footage, including Reneé Fleming singing Bellini's "Casta Diva" from Norma.

This dvd has been long awaited by us Dmitri and Renee fans, and I, for one, was only slightly disappointed. The only quibble I had was that since Dmitri is the Russian, he should have been showing her (and us) the city. Instead, Renee acted as tour guide. Other than that, it was a marvelous film...these two have true chemistry, and they both sounded terrific. They did selections which may not be familiar to casual opera fans or newcomers, but they were easy to listen to, and, of course, the sub-titles made it a snap to understand what they were singing about. The palaces were beautiful beyond belief, and had I not seen them all myself, I would not have been able to comprehend the beauty and opulence of these places.

Besides being a terrific musical evening, the travelogue aspect made it doubly appealing, and would serve as a great souvenir for anyone who has been to St Petersburg, and an extra spur for those contemplating such a trip.

This dvd takes you into a kind of ideal world, an earthly paradise. St. Petersburg is sublimely beautiful. The indoor settings are sublimely beautiful. The music is sublimely beautiful. Renee and Dmitri are sublimely beautiful. Their performances are sublimely beautiful. Even their clothes are sublimely beautiful. Moment after moment leaves you breathless. Yes, in an absolutely perfect world, Dmitri would have led the tour, not Renee. And the "bonus" materials would have been integrated into the main body, not set aside where they may be overlooked, Well don't overlook them. Especially, don't overlook Renee's Casta Diva. If there is one moment in this tour of the sublime that is most sublime, that is it. She seems to have astonished herself.

Renee Fleming & Dmitri Hvorostovsky: A Musical Odyssey in St. Petersburg
I am a big fan of Renee Fleming and Dmitri Hvorostovsky and that is why I knew that eventually I was going to buy this DVD.
When I saw these two singers performing together in Eugene Oneguin aside of that they are very good singers they also have chemistry when they act together.
The parts that I enjoyed the most were when they sang together, in this DVD they do some duets and they have to play different roles, like lovers, daughter and father, etc and they do it very well like those feelings are really true, they also sang different areas and songs very well.
This DVD also can be very enjoyable for people that are not into opera because it also shows this beautiful city, its history and art as well as all the palaces they sang. Renee Fleming narrates episodes from the history of Saint Petersburg that can be also very interesting and with a lot of information that of course the DVD has to be watched more than once to get all this knowledge, but that is good if someone is going to buy a DVD is to see it many times and enjoy it.

Overall the program consists of a few Italian but mostly Russian composers. I did not enjoy all the pieces but Renee's voice is marvelous. I wish her wardrobe was comparable. It looked as though she wraped herself in a bolt of fabric or curtains, very unflattering and looked like a crumpled mess. The presentation in various beautiful palaces/museums in St Petersburg is well done and aesthically appealing compared to most staged performances in concert halls. You even get a tour of the city in short segements. The sound track quality is very good. A very pleasing experience.

A sumptuous package.....beautiful music, glorious singing by two highly attractive musicians, elegant settings, and a short tour of some highlights of St. Petersburg. I enjoyed it so much that I immediately played it again. The selections were well chosen, allowing Fleming and Hvorostovsky to sing together but also to have their solo turns.
My only quibbles: Fleming's two dresses were cut precariously low and Hvorostovsky should have been allowed to narrate some of the short side tours since he is Russian.

Why on earth is Renee doing all the narration? After all, Russia is Dmitri's country and St. Petersberg his city. There is no significant language barrier. He speaks very good English, but says not a word. Of course his singing is enough. However, having had him narrate at least a part of the sight-seeing would have much enhanced the overall program for this viewer.
