Book Description

Life’s tough if you’re a boy named Gisbo. Besides having a name that means "dog" in a barbaric tongue and being forced to live all alone in a manure shack outside the city walls, Gisbo has also never soared on a flying sword, raised a boon animal, or made a single friend.

When he isn’t washing the graffiti off his shack, Gisbo’s time is spent dodging insults from his spoiled classmates and fighting for his life against the city’s arrogant clash team.

But all of that is going to change. Gisbo is finally sixteen and ready to try out for Elekai’ training in hopes of becoming an Elekai’ warrior, his biggest dream. However, when the tryouts go terribly wrong, Gisbo is whisked away to a life he never dreamed possible and learns that sometimes, truth can be stranger than legend when you’re Renegade born.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spontaneity Pays Off March 5, 2012
By Atticus
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Personally I am an avid reader of fantasy and science fiction, and especially love coming of age novels with strong, if imperfect, protagonists. Finding books in that category is however not so easy and thus I browse Amazon, spontaneously buying whatever catches my eye and that is how I stumbled upon Renegade Rising. I read the book in one day and loved every moment of it.

The tale is set in a world called Thera that is shared by four races of man, the Aquarians with an affinity for water, the Naforians with an affinity for earth, the Saorians with an affinity for air, and Flarians with an affinity for fire and a reputation for being dangerous, barbaric and easily set off.
The story follows Gisbo, or "dog" in the language of the despised and feared Flarians. Because of his heritage and name, Gisbo is forced to live in a stinking shack on the outskirts of the castle where a patrolman found him at a young age with no memories but his name. He is universally hated and shunned because of his name, his tenacity, and his lack of family. He believes that his only path to happiness is to join the ranks of Elekai Warriors who can harness their innate racial powers for use in combat, however things go terrible wrong during the tryouts and he is thrust into a world of joy and suffering, friendship and betrayal, dreams and nightmares.

Overall the books is well written with only a few and minor editing errors that do not distract the reader from the material at hand. The books does slow down a bit around half-way though with philosophy but it is short and easy to get through, and back into the story. The Gisbo's intelligence or more often lack of is strangely endearing and enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book reminded me of an anime February 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was a good read with an interesting world. The story revolves around a character called Gisbo who is going to learn to be what is called a Renegade a group of elite warriors who fight for good. His story takes him from being no one to being someone. You go through his training and the challenges of realizing his power.

Bad
- Gisbo the main character is a great to start out with but in the middle of the story is pretty irritating.
- The whole dog boy thing goes a little far I mean even his boon animal is a wolf. I would of liked to see something more original.
- The philosophizing gets a little long in the tooth and starts to dip into preaching.

Good
- Story is fun with a few plot twists but really feels like you are settling in to an old friend.
- The magic system is simple and easy to read.
- Gisbo is a fun character and shines in the beginning and end.
- Long book and well worth the price

Overall
I liked the characters and the story iteself was fun the whole thing reminded me a Naruto for some odd reason. As Gisbo starts to get trained I disliked that he was always overshadowed by his friend I felt that Gisbo never did anything that he excelled at. But I do recommend the book to anyone that likes the genre it is written well and the dialogues although strained in the banter department was enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally done March 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Let me start by saying that I am a reader of all genres and generally have no preference to one. As for my review of Renegade Rising it is going to be difficult for it not to sound like flattery...but that is what it is, I have to give credit when credit is due and JC Fiske hit the ball out of the park with this one. There were certain aspects of the story that are far from the norm in the fantasy genere and I very much appreciated the break in the monotony. For example, the author puts modern flair into the fantasy world with the dialogue...meaning every character does not speak like its the cliche olden days and they must be high born or low born from their speech. Also the author takes into account the smallest of details which confirm that the setting of the story has no time...for example there are no firearms in the renegade world but the characters regularly eat more modern or culturally diverse food items such as sushi, grilled steaks, caramel apples and coconut. That's great! Now I as a reader am less focused on the time period and inaccuracies like having a more modern medical facility in mideval times and can focus wholly on the character and plot development. JC Fiske also keeps you in the fantasy world by taking more modern sports or activities and renaming them to a more fantasy liking i.e. water skeeting, snow skeeting, ice skeeting.

The pace of the story is amazing and does not drag with to much detail as many authors tend to do. On the other side of the spectrum there is enough detail to keep the pace up and give the reader a clear image in his or her head of the story progressing. I equate this personally to outstanding character development by JC Fiske. All the main characters had clear backgrounds without being overly dramatic and annoying.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent Read March 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Renegade Rising was an extremely enjoyable book to read. The balance between character progression, story, and action is very well done. As a fan of both the Harry Potter series and both of Riordans demigod series this book really impressed me. Great albeit simple magic system and fun cast of characters. I highly recommend this book to anyone whose a fan of Rowling and Riordan.

I finished it. I'm not really sure why. It was predictable. It was not very well written. The characters would have been better if they'd been more developed. Read more
