5.0 out of 5 stars FUNKY DOCTOR!
This book is subtitled: the Revolutionary Anti-Aging Program, and that it certainly is!

Dr Smith is not shy to recommend optimal dosages of supplements (I hate over-cautious nutritionists) and he's a militant Vegan which limits his appeal somewhat, I guess.

But I do think he's right in most respects. I also love his witty, engaging writing style, for example drawing...

The idea is simple enough. Aging is caused by free radical damage, so minimize exposure by eating an organic vegan diet (no animal products of any kind), and fight free radical damage by exercising daily and taking a boatload of supplements including hormones, herbs, vitamins and other stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars FUNKY DOCTOR!, April 2, 2001
This book is subtitled: the Revolutionary Anti-Aging Program, and that it certainly is!

Dr Smith is not shy to recommend optimal dosages of supplements (I hate over-cautious nutritionists) and he's a militant Vegan which limits his appeal somewhat, I guess.

But I do think he's right in most respects. I also love his witty, engaging writing style, for example drawing analogies between the Great Wall of China and the cell membrane!

He introduces concepts such as the New Four Food Groups and provides excellent advice on diet, dietary supplements, exercise and how to avoid toxins.

In this book I have found the clearest description of free radicals and their nemesis, the anti-oxidants, as well as the most informative info on anti-aging hormones and the latest neuronutrients.

The only flaw is that Renewal neglects the amino acids. Besides that, the book is highly readable and highly recommended, and includes recipes, meal ideas, a menu plan, thorough index and extensive bibliography....END

1.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, Sensational, Misleading, September 28, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is readable and interesting, with some expected advice and a few surprising ones. Especially interesting are his arguments against consuming all forms of animal-derived food including milk and his case against red wine.

However, anyone who knows anything about traditional Chinese medicine will see that Dr Smith can't be a serious practitioner or even a believer of TCM. Most TCM tonics contain animal parts. One of the most highly prized Chinese/Tibetan "herb" is cordyceps sinensis.

Medicinal wines are also a very important part of Chinese medicine. Chinese physicians believe that alcohol clears the body's channels and moves the qi. Delivered with certain herb combinations, alcohol enhances the therapeutic effects.

Ginseng is not a miracle herb. For the wrong body type, it can cause more harm than good. Osteoporosis is not well-documented in China. It doesn't mean it does not exist. In fact, rickets used to be quite common until school children were encouraged to drink milk.

There are a lot of other debatable points. Suffice to say that while this book makes an interesting read, one shouldn't take it too seriously.

The idea is simple enough. Aging is caused by free radical damage, so minimize exposure by eating an organic vegan diet (no animal products of any kind), and fight free radical damage by exercising daily and taking a boatload of supplements including hormones, herbs, vitamins and other stuff.

The problem I had is that his diet recomendations are too extreme. I know people who've had two heart attacks who can't keep their fat intake to 10% of calories on the Pritikin program, and they have a major incentive. Personally, getting to a vegan diet at all would be a minor miracle, but for Smith that's not good enough, you still have to make sure not to eat too much olive oil, avacado, and sugar. Throughout the book is very good info, but the program itself is too radical (no pun intended) to be useful for 95% of us. ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - Covers all aspects of Life Extension, January 6, 2000
This review is from: Renewal the Anti-Aging Revolution: The Breakthrough Program (Hardcover)
I have read many books on Life Extension, starting with Durk Pearson & Sandy Shaw's book in 1983. This new book, "Renewal the Anti-Aging Revolution" covers all the aspects that I have encountered in books, magazines and on the web. It is totally comprehensive. This is the ONE to get.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book has had a significant impact on my health., August 26, 1999

This review is from: Renewal the Anti-Aging Revolution: The Breakthrough Program (Hardcover)
In his book Dr. Smith put together essential information in one place at one time that influenced a complete dietary lifestyle change for myself and my husband. The mystery of complicated cellular chemistry is made simple and easy to understand. Further, I now understand what free radicals are and how they attack the body and what to do about them. The steps to good health choices outlined by Dr. Smith are do-able; we have done them and are already reaping the rewards. This book makes you stop, think and act. It is very readable and will be an ongoing reference in our home for years and years to come. This is not a diet book, it is a lifestyle choice that makes ulitmate sense and provides almost immediate positive benefits. The recipes that get you started on the lifestyle changes are great and provide encouragement for further vegan creativity. Thank you, Dr. Smith!

5.0 out of 5 stars Renewal offers hope for a disease free retirement., November 30, 1998

This review is from: Renewal the Anti-Aging Revolution: The Breakthrough Program (Hardcover)
As a patient, of Tim Smith's, I have utilized his ideas for several years now and have seen the results. His ideas cured my chronic headaches, removed the cholesterol issue from my life and has made me feel better, stronger, happier. I am glad to see him share his knowledge with the world. I have read his book in manuscript form but now am enjoying the material in an easy to read format. I am especially glad to see the receipes in the book because when you adopt his approach to food, at first it is daunting. Giving up some of your favorite foods is difficult until you develop, or find in his book, receipes that create nutritious new ways to eat. As you can tell, I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you Dr. Smith, April 18, 2000

There is a lot of information in this book! It provides an easy to understand explanation of the free-radical theory of damage to our bodies. Dr. Smith's nutritional and supplement program are excellent, and his suggestions for implementing the program gradually and without struggle are very helpful. I am already feeling the benefit of better nutrition. Also, after several years on the SSRI antidepressants with side-effects which scare me to death, I am hopeful of developing a program using the natural hormones such as pregnenolone with the help of a naturapathic physician.

I have to admit, I got this book accidently through a book club, but boy am I glad I did. Although I've got books from McDougall, Barnard, Bragg, etc... Mr. Smith puts all their information and much more together in a comprehensive, easy-to-understand format. I'm certain I'll be referring back to this book for years to come. Clear a space on your shelf for it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best nutrition book I ever read, February 20, 2002
By
This review is from: Renewal the Anti-Aging Revolution: The Breakthrough Program (Hardcover)
I have read many nutrition and health books, some have been ok reads but some have been rather boring. This book ranks #1 in my favorite of all the health books, a fun read, very informative and he touches on the more technical aspects (something I like to hear about). This book is perfect in every fashion and I hope he plans on updating and re-releasing the book in 2002 or 2003 with all the new information and studies that have been performed on carotenoids, phytochemicals and the millions of other substances in fruits and vegatables thats are still being research.

The only negative thing I can say about this book is that Timothy repeats the same info in different chapters and that he doesn't mention that some of the vitamins/minerals/herbs when taken at their optimal dosages can have side effects (such as the optimal dosage of Ginko Bilboa causes headches, the same for ginseng) and he totally missed the fact that ginseng should be taken for a 3 weeks, then stopped for a week or two, then started again.

After reading this book thouroughly I can seriously say anybody interested in good health information, this book is a must read. And any dietition/nutritionist that hasn't read this book should be ashmed of themselves to the book where I would recommend finding a new dietition/nutritionist if they haven't read this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good starting point, September 2, 2005
This book, and subsequently the desire to research additional sources, has made a remarkable difference to the three people in my family.
One reviewer wrote that "any serious book on rejuvenation would mention phosphatidylcholine". Of course phosphatidylcholine is mentioned, along with dosage suggestions.
The reviewer may not know that phosphatidylcholine is known as lecithin, although lecithin is also a term loosely applied to describe a combination of phosphatidylcholine with other phospholipids.
As a satisfied customer and user of Smith's methodology I recommend this book.
