Review

What a wonderful book. For years I thought God was calling me to joy, but never happiness.
Stephen Arterburn, President New Life Live, author of Every Man's Battle

Years ago I read Thomas Moore's Care of the Soul...I loved it, but also had to confess it was pretty thick at times and that 'thickness' might keep some from discovering the vital truth of self-care. Lucille Zimmerman's Renewed does what Moore's book did but minus the thick; in other words, she serves up the good stuff in easily digestible portions, all based on the wisdom of others plus her own hard-won experience. The quick read (I finished it in a morning) feels like a conversation with a trusted friend, someone who cares deeply about you . . .
- John D. Blase, author

Lucille Zimmerman has written an easy to read, well-organized book, targeted to Christian women with the purpose of helping them understand the importance of and the specific ways of taking better care of themselves. Even though the specific audience is Christian women, that does not mean that others cannot benefit from the principles put forth in this book. This book can be a very positive influence for those not of the Christian faith. The principles also apply to men.

From the Author

Many of the ideas I'll be sharing in this book stem from the latest research on happiness and positive psychology, so there is clinical evidence to back them up. These simple ideas have the capacity to change your life in a big way.

Thomas Merton said, "Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance and order and rhythm and harmony."

My book is by no means exhaustive, but it offers ways for you to incorporate balance, order, rhythm and harmony, and best of all, it gives you permission to take care of yourself. Some of the topics I'll be addressing are emotional self care, figuring our your identity, creating healthy boundaries, spirituality, solitude, secret sharing, appreciating beauty, play, exercise, forgiveness, grieving, what happens in counseling, the importance of connection, generosity and gratitude.

If you chose this book, at some deep level you must know that it is time to consider your own health and you are ready to enjoy your life and your family and find your way to that beautiful word: balance. I applaud you for recognizing that, and I look forward to sharing life-changing strategies to help you better care for yourself in the pages and days to come.

Sometimes you pick up a spiritual self-help and it's a lot of platitudes and pretty comments that barely scrape the surface, but not this one. The author knows her subject well, plus, she's lived through getting in a healthier place by following her own advice, and shares what works and doesn't work. She gives practical steps toward things like setting boundaries with toxic people, what forgiveness really means, and offers practical exercises with lists of ideas to start on your own journey to being happier. There, I said, it and I'm happy I did! Yes, it's OK to seek happiness, and RENEWED is a great place to start.

Most women are very nurturing by nature. They are very good at looking after and taking care of others. However, too many neglect to take care of themselves. The specific reasons why women fail to take care of themselves vary greatly. The truth is that most reasons given are not valid. You really need to take care of yourself first. If you fail to take care of yourself, eventually you will not be able to take care of others.

Renewed is all about ways to heal emotional wounds. We all suffer emotional wounds as we grow up. Unless we specifically develop ways to cope with these emotional scars, we will carry that baggage throughout our lives. In mild cases it can just be a drag on life. In extreme cases the depression can be debilitating. The goal of Renewed is to teach us how to deal with these wounds and live the best life possible by taking care of our emotional needs.

The book takes a very logical approach to emotional self-care. Ms. Zimmerman deals with the steps to find out who you are and your purpose on earth. One of the most difficult problems most people deal with is setting of boundaries. Too often we allow others to infringe on our time, energy and personal boundaries.

Lucille Zimmerman takes the topic of self care to a completely different level. Not only does she provide plenty of easy to follow advice and clinical help, but she opens her own heart and shares it with the reader. She takes her past pain and life experiences and gives practical ways to incorporate helpful strategies for our own lives. Yes, it is focused toward Christian readers, but is in no way preachy. It is one of those books that you will need a highlighter to mark your favorite passages. With chapters on ways to renew through: Figuring out who you are, Healthy Boundaries, Solitude, Forgiveness and so on, Lucille gives the reader reasons to revisit her book. It reads like a conversation between friends.

This is a book contains wisdom I wish I had at twenty, and reminders I still need at mid-life, to regularly refill my own well. Lucille shows that in order to have something to give to those we love, we have to replenish our physical, spiritual and emotional energy. With wonderful personal stories and a therapist's keen insight, Renewed, is a like a cup of cold water to women who are parched for permission to take care of themselves. It's the sort of book you want to give to a friend you love, or a grown daughter.

I was drawn to Ms. Zimmerman's conversational style of writing from page one. But what really captured me was her content. I invested the time to do the "Who's Eating Gilbert Grape" exercise, and it revealed things I had no idea were locked inside of myself. This easy read holds the power to offer life-changing insights, and gives the reader permission to care for themselves in an unselfish way. The author makes you feel as though she's your personal champion. Loved Renewed, and finding my own inner happy after reading it.

If you feel guilty, selfish, or self-indulgent when you take time for yourself, this book is for you. The overall purpose of this book is for the reader to understand what self-care is; to see the importance of putting yourself on the “to-do” list and that self-care is easy, however it doesn’t come naturally to most of us.

Zimmerman gives reassuring and motivating suggestions on how to make room for the necessary change, in order to come to a place of renewal, with the intention of experiencing real joy, the freedom to play, and share connection with a significant other or spend time in solitude. The author’s research on scientific and Biblically based ideas of social/emotional, psychological, spiritual and physical self-care offer the reader a space to find wonder and a place to discover the sacred that comes their way, which lends itself to renew personal needs and the ability to offer those significant to us the most valuable thing to anyone---oneself.

Down deep most people, want peace and happiness. What makes this book unique from other self-help books are the Renewed through Sharing Secrets and Renewed through Connection chapters. These chapters indicate that many think their personal secrets stay hidden, but they can leak out in forms of anger, guilt, addiction, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and self-injury. No one is created to be an island, living in complete isolation and it is important to know how to share secrets in safety. Zimmerman shares how to safely share secrets, be authentic, and allow for one to be really seen by others. Sharing secrets and making connections to others matter as it gives us a sense of belonging and value for who we are, no matter the total sum of our life history.
