From Library Journal
These companion volumes offer first-hand accounts from two outstanding French film directors of their philosophies and (in Rohmer's case) assessments of other directors' work. Renoir is best known for his enduring masterpieces, Grand Illusion and Rules of the Game. His book is highlighted by four lengthy interviews from the influential French film journal, Cahiers du Cinema , which promoted the controversial auteur theory in columns by Rohmer and such future directors as Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard. Rohmer's volume offers many of his richest work for Cahiers, including reviews of films as diverse as Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? and Vertigo. The Cahiers material from both volumes is available in English for the first time. These are valuable additions to film scholarship, although the specialized nature of the material makes them more attractive for larger collections.- Thomas Wiener, formerly with "American Film," Washington, D.C.
