Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Any homeowner is faced with a set of decisions when it comes to home repairs and renovations. There are those renovations one does purely to satisfy personal taste and desires--and these can be value-enhancing for the home--and then there are those renovations and enhancements that are almost guaranteed to increase the sale value of a property. Dan Lieberman zeros in on the latter. With people moving and selling their homes as frequently as they do these days, making improvements to enhance the potential resale value of your home is smart and prudent. This new, revised edition covers financing renovations, dealing with contractors and subcontractors, estimating remodeling costs, avoiding common and costly mistakes, creating warmth and comfort in the home, enhancing buyer demand for your home, and significant improvements you can accomplish yourself throughout your home at minimum cost for maximum return at sale time. --Mark A. 3.0 out of 5 stars Are Home Improvements Worth the Effort?, February 20, 2006
This review is from: Renovating Your Home for Maximum Profit, Revised 3rd Edition (Paperback)
This is a good book to acquaint the reader with some of the important factors to consider when deciding whether or not to renovate one's property. There's no doubt that renovations do payoff in the long run and, in many cases, renovations are essential if you want to sell your house. From talking to real estate professionals, I have learned that one of the most critical selling points is whether or not the rooms in a house have been updated and look modern. If your rooms are outdated, you may be forced to accept a lower offer from prospective buyers. When I bought my current property, the basement was finished, but the walls were covered with dark paneling and the walls of the basement stairway were painted brick red! It was quite ugly, and I knew I would want to make improvements, so I lowered the amount of my bid to compensate for the cost I would have to incur to refinish the basement. This is the type of material covered in this book. It is all about making your home look as up to date as possible in order to maximize its value.

There's a section of pictures, in color, in the middle of the book illustrating what rooms looked like before and after renovations were made. These pictures do a good job showing just how much difference a little work can make.

This is a good, practical book, but it's also a bit mundane and boring. It's really a reference book, and not something that most individuals would want to pick up and read, from cover to cover. You won't find inspiration here, or anything earth- shattering or unique. It's just a reference guide for those who are thinking about making some renovations to their home.

If you need to sell your house soon, and you've got some work to do before placing your home on the market, then this book could provide you with the answers and advice that you need. It's not the best book I've ever read on this subject, but it's a good place to start.
