Editorial Reviews

Renzo is the third generation of Jiu Jitsu fighters from the famous Brazilian Gracie family, tracing their art back to the last great samurai school in Japan. Renzo and the Gracie name are inextricably linked to the global phenomenon of mixed martial art fighting, currently the fastest growing sport in the world. The film follows him over a 10 year period from the days when Renzo fought bare knuckle in a cage with little or no rules. After the fights are banned from US television he follows the fight scene to Japan where his skill, honour and refusal to give up, even when suffering brutal injuries, make him a huge star. While others fight for fame and glory, Renzo is driven by a will to honour the family legacy. Although he continues to test himself in competition against the best on the planet, his passion for his art is equalled by a need to pass on his skills and experience. As another generation rise under his tuition, Renzo fights on into his late 30s, when injuries and a downturn in his fight record signal an end to his career. He returns to his roots and mentor in Brazil to consider his future and reaches the only decision he can live with. Returning to the US, his comeback catches a new wave of national interest. After being profiled on 60 minutes, the fight attracts 17 million American viewers and becomes the highest viewed in mixed martial art history.

LEGACY is an absorbing profile of Renzo Gracie, one of the latest carriers of the Gracie jiu-jitsu flame. It covers ten years of his active fighting career, with some back-story relating to his early years and family ties.

Unlike many puff profiles, "Legacy" does not just selectively show the fights that the protagonist wins. In fact, I think most of the fights shown were ones where Renzo lost. Even if defeat, Renzo is gracious and tenacious. He reacted to defeat by picking himself up and getting back into the gym.

The most telling vignette is one where Renzo recalls being at a fighting event, sitting with a group of other fighters awaiting their bouts. Reach of the other fighters comments on what they had rather be doing. Gracie exploded, "What the #$%^ is wrong with you?! There's no place on earth I'd rather be!!"

For fans of MMA, jiu-jitsu or the Gracies, LEGACY will be a genuine treat!

This is certainly not a bad documentary but it's not great. Some of Renzo's best fights are talked about but not shown in any detail at all. I'm assuming licensing issues are to blame. As a result, this film is seriously lacking in action. I was really hoping to relive Renzo's early Pride fights that I remember enjoying so much at the time, but there was little to be found there.

I would give this film 3 stars for the documentary itself, but I added a star for the awesome special feature content. If you're a serious BJJ fan then you will really enjoy the added scenes of training and talking about training. I also loved the added scene of Renzo and Relson just hanging out in the gym and telling stories.

This is not a must have for any but the most obsessed Gracie fans, but at $5 bucks it is absolutely worth getting if you have any interest in the sport.

Of course, he wasn't before I saw this film. The documentary follows Renzo's path in the early world of mixed martial arts. Along the way, we see the many sides of the man. Father, fighter, teacher, student, in whatever light you see him in, Renzo's personality bursts to life. Some of the bonus materials featuring his students Ricardo Almeida and Matt Serra really bring the viewer into what a training camp is like. The film is very good, but the man it's about is truly amazing.

This video motivates and inspires.
Wonderful seeing Renzo's background and seeing how he is driven to be the Legend that he is.
I've met Renzo various times and he is the same on the video as he is in person.
Lots of great action and seeing his heart as he trains as well as trains others.

awesome dvd. This is a very inspirational video that goes over renzo gracies career from 1997 onwards. It has a lot of cool footage of his academy of his fights and him discussing his philosophies. it describes his fight vs tadeu then goes on to his matches in japan including his fights in pride against shoji all the way up to his fight with saku and newton. then it has footage of him in brazil training at gracie barra with carlinhos. it ends with pat militech getting caught in a guillotine choke.

This man Renzo Gracie loves life & family as deeply as he is lethal! He will go down in lore as an extraordinary human being that all who interacted with him will be better for having known him. There is a popular saying about the sport of rugby that states, "A hooligan sport played by gentlemen," and if you've ever watched it, it is true. Well, it's fair to say that mixed-martial arts is a hooligan sport, and Renzo Gracie is most certainly a gentleman! An AMAZING story.

Interesting documentary about Renzo Gracie. He's quite a character, bigger than life in victory and defeat. The bonus feature is great and the highligts of his fight with BJ Penn along with the strategic discussion worth alone the price of this DVD.
